I've raved several times elsewhere on the Forum about, loosely, a lack of archiving of model-specific information.

In all that time, I've failed to acknowledge the very excellent work that's been undertaken by the 100 guys, a club that I'd one day love to belong to.

So, hearty congratulations for your collective enthusiasm and excellent work in providing a repository of S-100 information.

Gary.

We're a small (but growing) group, and we certainly are organized, aren't we? I attribute the enthusiam to Qvart and Hammer. There are so many others who sing the virtues of the S-100, but not as loudly and frequently as Masters Q and H.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see the S-100 on Guild's short list of models to consider if/when they re-introduce Guild 'leccies. Sure hope so.

Nothing like a rabid fan club to push the envelope. :)

Tell me, guys, what is it specifically about the S-100 -- compared to other Guild and electrics -- that makes you feel so strongly about them? I'm asking purely out of interest, not because I have any opinion on the model(s) myself (other than enjoying the one I had in my hands before sending it to Qvart).

I'm not sure there's an easy answer. All I can say is when I picked one up for the first time it felt like it was made for me - perfectly balanced, great neck, smooth as butter. Then I hit a chord.......tone and sustain for days. For the sound, feel, and build quality, you'd be hard pressed to get more bang for your buck. Of course, there's something to be said for other brands as well. I do after all have a Fender in the stable, and others around here have more diversity as well. But the S-100 is definitely the desert island pry-it-from-my-cold-dead-hands guitar. Not so much the reissues, but definitely the '70's - both early and later ones.

Of course, for some, the fascination began with Kim Thayil of Soundgarden. I was never much of a fan, and Guilds never grabbed my attention until I went shopping for an SG a couple years ago. I wasn't thrilled with the prices but willing to fork over the cash for one I really liked (despite the notorious headstock dives). Then I saw this band Kylesa with two guitarists playing reissue S-100's. I had no idea what the guitar was, but I was blown away by them and they looked like SG's. So I started doing some research and ended up buying an S-90 and '96 S-100 within about a week of each other. A little later I snagged the '74 S-100C and man what a difference! After that the S-90 and '96 sat idle a lot. Then I got the '73 S-100C and that was it. The S-90 and '96 were sold off and I eventually picked up two more with the different neck angles and tailpiece spacing (and you helped with the red '75).

Hey Chaz!

The S-100 is simply in a league of it's own.
I can only vouch for the original ones (70's) as I have never touched a re-issue, but answering your question will only require two words: Sound and feel.
It's one of these guitars that when you play it, it becomes alive.
Yet another mind blowing example (as far as I'm concerned) of how Guild flew under the radar pretty much my whole life.
I had to be pushing 50, and get a red neck from Southeast Ohio to get me convinced to get the damn thing......
Love you man!!!

Hey, I just do as I'm told. You said "GO VINTAGE" and vintage I went, and I thank you every time I pick up one of my S-100s. :D :!:

For me, I can't pin my S-100 lust on Kim Thayil because, although I am a Soundgarden fan, I never used to pay attention to what guitar he was playing. My route to the S-100 as my guitar of choice came after I fell in love with Guild solidbodies, and eventually worked my way towards the S-100. My '73 walnut Standard was my fifth Guild solidbody, and was the direct result of all the talk about how great S-100s were. And when I played it for the first time, I could understand what all the fuss was about. Sound, feel and looks, this one has it all.

The other S-100s in my herd came via a trade (the '77 Standard), a matsickma-inspired lust for a Deluxe (the '73 nature boy), a Holy Grail posting by Treem (the '73 sunburst Deluxe) and one for simple justification and rampant GASing purposes (the '73 cherry Carved, which gave me all the S-100 model options for 1973). And they're all different enough, however slightly, to make me want to keep them all without hesitation.

I still think it's much easier to elevate the S-100 to our king of the solidbodies because Guild didn't produce that many solidbodies, and it certainly fits nicely into the influences and playing styles of the owners who make up the S-100 roster. How can anyone make a similar claim for one of Guilds many outstanding acoustics? I think even our acoustic contingent would have a hard time agreeing which singular Guild acoustic would be worth of S-100 Owners Roster appeal (or fanaticism, depending on how you look at it). There's just too many great ones out there to choose from.

Okay, fellas, I've never played an S-100, though I've owned a couple of JS II basses.

Here's my question, in all seriousness. How do they compare to Gibson SG guitars? Same neck dive, same '2 frets further out to the left' of all my other solid-body guitars?

Which ones have the widest and biggest necks? [I know it ain't the early '70's!]

Thanks, gilded

If I've learned anything from my children, it's selective listening. The other thing is, I haven't decided which one is the extra Deluxe. I can't give away the extra one until I figure out which one is the extra, now can I? Surely you, with the only three 1st reissues on the Owners Roster, can appreciate that.
