Definitely different beasties. While comparing new ones, back-to-back, at my local store there was a very different character to the sound of the D-55 compared to the D-50. This could be attributed (as already indicated) to different soundboard material in the last decade (the D-50 has red (Adirondack) spuce while the D-55 uses Sitka).

You'd really do yourself a favor if you could find a couple to play. And indeed, different eras are likely to sound different even in the same model. I don't know if the dimensions changed all that much, but thicknesses, bracing, etc. all varied over time. I do think both were always made from solid, flat-backed rosewood bodies, but I'm not positive.

I have a 93 D 50 (Westerly made, ???yes???)

I bought it used in 2006 for $700 bucks....it was in mint condition. When I walked into the shop it spoke to me. I haven't been dissapointed at all with this guitar......sound, feel, workmanship or playability.

However, sometimes at night it does hog all the covers....but other than that I haven't a complaint.

My .o2....

listening to guitars is like looking at images on a computer screen....it all depends on the screen.

my d50 is loud and soft, crisp and mellow, ringing highs and deep lows, sometimes I'm very happy with the sound, sometimes not...sometimes i stum near the bridge, sometimes over the soundhole, sometimes near the neck....sometimes it sounds different, sometimes it don't.

but i'm always pleased with it, regardless of the strings, song, humidity, or time of day.

lance said it best...."it ain't about the bike"
