It's been theorized that since it's a result of pressure deformation the wood may be a bit denser allowing slightly thinner more resonant tops, but like Sandy said who knows if it's really audible? Maybe a guy like Hoover or Dana Burgeois?
I like the aesthetic appeal too in any case.

And the one I hope to acquire has the most bear claw I have seen on a Sitka top, not that I look for that a lot, but it was striking to me, all that claw. the playability, the ease, the power and bass thump, yet total clarity in upper strings. These have "advanced" scalloped bracing so the sound just pops out and sounds larger even for a dread. I liked that a lot too. A simple C chord sounded like a much larger more complex chord, yet it was only a C chord. Like Neal said above, if the guitar makes my small instrumentals sound larger, then that is an end in itself...:) I will want to play them more, invest more time in it, and not expend effort where it is not needed just to hear what I want to hear. My fave part of the story was when Nic was watching me with it...

"Well, that is a Woody guitar, it is totally your guitar. Want to just buy it?"
"Can we? I mean, really, cause etc etc....?"
"Let's see"

I will never forget that part of the story...

Hoping you get it Wood. It is special moment in life when you completely and totally bond with an instrument upon picking it up. That is the feeling I get every time I play my Orpheum Jumbo. There is no comparison that can be made. When it happens it just happens and if you don't give yourself to it you'll regret it for the rest of time. Sounds like your wife understands that as well. There is always a way to make it work financially. When I was a kid my father would refer to it as Creative Financing, LOL, That is one of the things that rubbed off on me. Best of luck to you Wood and if anybody deserves it after going through what you have been through with the BR it is you. Wishing you the best and hope you get it soon!

Here is the blurb on Artisan Gtr site re bear claw and the D/PWM....the standard DPW is rosewood back and sides, mine is hog.

"We have taken the standard D/PW and commissioned a custom line we call the "Traditional Series." Incorporating elements that harken back to a simplier time, we start with a custom Bear Claw Sitka Spruce top. Legend has it that the figuring on Bear Claw Spruce was a result of grizzly bears scratching at the bark. In reality, it is a genetic abnormality that stiffens the cross grain. Other additions include a custom Herringbone purfling, which opens the top slightly. Bear Claw Sitka Spruce is matched with Mahogany - bringing clarity and defintiton. By combining these changes with the D/PW, you get an instrument that is balanced, crisp, and warm across the entire tonal spectrum with vintage appointments and a classic feel."

but I didn't know any of the above approach when I saw it. It had me at hello.

Yeah but trust me nobody'll hold it against ya if you stop at 2.
Especially with those 2.

I am stopping at 2 so I can live with my wife and kids and not in a van down by the river...:) But wow!
What a turn of events!

Wood, find out what brand/gauge of strings are on the guitar, just so you know your starting point.

I should have asked. I am changing them next weekend. Gonna stick with lights regardless. Plan on the D'Addario NBs to start. Then phos bronze. I heard Nic fingerpicking it earlier tonite while I was doing something else. Real clear from rooms away.

walrus loves the phosphor bronze,
we all know the pros and cons,
wood is all about the nickel,
but we all know the man is fickle,
chazmo knows this silk and steel,
which truly has little appeal,
round core square core, who can say?
we need another string thread now... today!

:)
