I'm looking for a guitar for my father-in-law. He asked if I could find him one with a thicker neck than the typical C-shaped electrics. Do any of you know of particular guild models/years with a more "thicker" neck?

Hi Dave,

Thickness and shape are two different things, if you're looking for a thick neck, any 90's Bluesbird will do, but they are C shaped though.

I thought the chunkiest necks were on the Blues90s.

Just as a data point, I owned a '00 Blues90 and a '98 Bluesbird a while back that had identically beefy neck profiles. I seem to remember Coastie saying the same thing about his pair.

Another data point here: My B90 and BB also have neck profiles that are practically identical.
They are a little thicker than the average S60/70/250/300, but also significantly wider, which for me makes a bigger difference.

My early Corona-made '02 bluesbird has a huge neck. 1.751" at the nut, beefy all the way down. Sometimes I think it's too big!
Not good at describing neck shapes, though, sorry. How about this; it's BIG!!!!!

i love me some nightbird/bluesbird/blues 90 too, and out of those, i personally found the Blues 90 to have the biggest neck, but of course it might change from guitar to guitar. and the Blues 90 has hot P90s with a reverse wind (so noiseless in the middle pickup position) so that may not be your typical speed if he's looking for a bucker. and all three are chambered, not solidbody, so there's that. however, a lighter guitar with a bigger neck might actually work for the OP's guy?

I had both a '00 Bluesbird, and a '00 Blues 90. The Bluesbird has what I would consider a 'medium' sized neck - this is my all time favorite guitar as far as neck feel. The Blues 90 had a considerably thicker neck - almost like an accoustic - a little too clunky for me.

I've not tried a Blues 90 yet, so can't say on that. Big variation in neck size and feel on the Bluesbirds I've picked up. One being quite large, almost D shaped, another being rather slender. My red Bluesbird has a perfect compromise neck. Not too large, medium C plus a bit. Not too shallow. If feels just right, matches the fretboard radius and width perfectly.

So it looks like a Blues 90 might be a safer purchase. More than likely it will be an online purchase where I will not be able to see or feel the neck in person.

thanks everyone

I don't want to speak for matsickma, so I'll let him do it (from another post).

A little comment about Blues90's verses Bluesbird 90's.

I owned two Green Blues 90's in the past. One had a blemish so I sold it to purchase a new one when Fender was blowing Guild electric line out of the stores. I then sold the new Blues 90 to get money for a Nighbird. I missed the Blues 90 and then purchased a beautiful blond Bluesbird 90. Nice chunky neck like the Blues 90 , same pickups but more ornate.

And then I noticed the difference....The Bluesbird 90 is a bit thinner and lighter than the Blues 90 and those differences combined with the chunky neck make the Bluesbird 90 less balanced than the Blues 90. The Bluesbird 90 has the tendency to have the neck pull the guitar down. I didn't have that issue with a Blues 90. It is definitly noticable and it kind of bugged me for a while. However the Bluesbird 90 is so pretty that I got over it and accomidate the difference.

So I again am longing for a Blues 90!

The moral of the story is always buy and never sell Guild guitars. I always regret it in the end. It is best to have a philosophy to leave it up to your Estate Sale to sell your Guilds. Unfortuanatly that doesn't work in the real world.
