I had a J-200 for a while. It was one of the few guitars I ever really made money on when I sold it. It was nice, impressive to look at, but kind of stiff and you had to beat on it to get anything out of it. It needs medium strings or heavier and it didn't finger pick well at all I didn't think.

Since then I bought a J-185, short scale, strums and fingerpicks great, its a real winner and I'm keeping it along with my GSR F-40.
I haven't played the Guild Jumbos. I wouldn't buy another J-200 and much as I love the J-185 the deep body does make it a little hard on the shoulder. It's easier than the J-200, easier than a dreadnought, but not as easy as the Guild. Now if Guild would make a short scale model...

Oh don't mind me, I don't mind the veer. Anything to keep you old folks busy. You can always tell there is a vicious veer in the works when you get 20+ responses in about 2 hours on a workday. :D

Interesting. In all honesty, I hear more bad things about the J200 than good...but that may be because I hang around the Guildies. I did not know that about the J185 (shortscale, deep body). Sound like something I would try. As far as the Guild small bodies go, they are quite comfortable even the deeper body of the F47s are pretty easy.

I have not had too much shortscale experience until recently with my F30. Who would have thought that only ~1/2" would make such a big difference.

We're less discreet cause we aren't trying to impress anyone any more...pretty much, what you see is what you get....maybe it just takes a lifetime to learn to be 'honest' plus we've made our share of screw ups..and we HAVE learned something along the way...if the mature 'us' could talk to the young 'us' we sure would have a lot to say.....plus a couple of slaps up the side of the head.....methinks.... Steffan

Well put Steff. Do you ever feel like life it too short and there's not time to bead around the bush? Lord I know I do that with my kids, but I THINK they still love me. :) Is this a veer?

Only the part about the beads and the bush.[/quote:23fuwykd]

Beat, bead....what the heck?

HEY ridge,

Thanks for posting the question. As you know I've tended towards the smaller bodied guitars of late ( in fact I reckon if they get any smaller next I'll be playing a UKE...), but Saturday night we went to see a guy by the name of Adam McGrath, lead singer of Lytellton band "The Eastern"( no I havent been able to find a link to a video clip), who played an Epiphone copy of a Gibson Jumbo. It was so cool it got me thinking about Jumbo's and big guitars so on Sunday when the wife went out, I put a strap on the D55 and had a great thrash. I'd gone away from playing the D55 as I usually played sitting down and it was just too big, but with a strap on standing up it was fine !!!

I suppose you are looking for one to fingerpick, whereas I'm a Strummer (Hi Joe !!!), but I'd really have to play one first to see how they fit. Quite confusing all the different models though, also the GAD's of similar designation seem to be a different size again.

Cheers, Ian

Don't hold back, Jim.

Tell us how you really feel.[/quote:iyqqw6fr]

Right there on that with Jim; those bridges (and pickguard inlays) are hideous IMO. I sure love my SWD, though. Nice unadorned guitar with all the good stuff.

Best smelling guitar I own, too (Hi Chaz!). I've yet to play a J45/50 or J200 that I like. Gibsons are like that. If you find one you like, buy it!

Hey Sandy, do you use a colone, perfume or essential oil? I know you have to not use alcohol on these, so maybe you put a touch on the tuners, if so, on 1 or 2, or more. :? ; cause, I have this new D50, and I'd like it to smell better too.....  Steffan

Indeedy. They don't make the Ovangkol ones anymore either, and the Rosewood SWD has a semi ugly mustache bridge.

No never anything artificial! There's just something about the Ovangkol that smells really sweet. It sounds pretty good too. 8)

I was playing Goin' to California in drop d, and actually felt like Jimmy Page for a fraction of a second.
