With “The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams,” Bob Dylan assembles a group of stars to put unrecorded lyrics of that country giant to music.

Here's an interesting article in the New York Times about the project:

Some folks object to this idea but I think it's fine. No one is going to think or imagine that these songs were "co-written" with Hank. They are what they are and there are some very capable artists involved. I'm looking forward to it!

For that matter there are zillions of songs out there with great music and crappy lyrics that could be the basis for someones next project.

All in the same vein with the "Mermaid Avenue" series that Billy Bragg and Wilco collaborated on a few years back. Nothing wrong with that at all; of course I'm a little prejudiced when it comes to Wilco...

I think it's a good idea. It sounds like the project was done well, artist selection looks good. I have most of Hank's recorded work, including the unreleased series. Few musicians inspire me to collect at that level, been a fan since I was 4 years old.

A pause for the cause: http://www.reinstatehank.org/
