Clearing cookies and opening in a new private window sometimes gets past the paywall. Waiting 12-24 hours also seems to succeed sometimes.

When I do get past the paywall I often print the article to a PDF for future reference in case the paywall goes back up. I also can share the PDF.

It's a thing.

Unfortunately, yes. It occurs at many levels and for a variety of reasons.

When I was a kid there was a notorious drummer, from one the big small town local groups, who seemed to be a kleptomaniac with regards to the gear of other bands. He took things he did not need or want, even things he could not use. Even a number of administrations of attitude readjustment at the hands of his victims did not cure him of his sticky hands.

A dear friend who worked as a professional bar-band musician, doing the bus tour of rural juke joints, clubs, and hotel bars, stopped using name-brand guitars, having lost a number to band-stand grab-and-runs, bus break-ins, and hotel/motel room break-ins.

The impulsive motivation of the kid in the story of Jones' dulcimer is interesting. It does not exonerate him, but it is interesting.

I think it is misleading to lump this theft with kleptomania or even profit driven motivations.

If you take the testimony at face value the thief was mad at the van driver and thought they were stealing something from the driver. When they found out otherwise they did make an effort to return the property, which ultimately succeeded. That does not exonerate him but does make him different from other thieves.

It's amazing how lackadaisical some rock stars are about this, like Slash "Someone called me on the phone, says I have a '59 flametop that was stolen from Joe Perry, and it was only $2800, and I just love this guitar" I have the sum wrong probably but Slash went on to record all the great GnR songs with it.
