Unfortunately, yes. It occurs at many levels and for a variety of reasons.
When I was a kid there was a notorious drummer, from one the big small town local groups, who seemed to be a kleptomaniac with regards to the gear of other bands. He took things he did not need or want, even things he could not use. Even a number of administrations of
attitude readjustment at the hands of his victims did not cure him of his sticky hands.
A dear friend who worked as a professional bar-band musician, doing the bus tour of rural juke joints, clubs, and hotel bars, stopped using name-brand guitars, having lost a number to band-stand grab-and-runs, bus break-ins, and hotel/motel room break-ins.
The impulsive motivation of the kid in the story of Jones' dulcimer is interesting. It does not exonerate him, but it is interesting.
