The best impulse buy I ever made

There’s been a lot of talk here lately about D40s and, man, it was really starting to aggravate my GAS. Then this came up on eBay.

I just couldn’t take the pressure any more and I completely caved in. It’s a 2005 Corona built D40 and I snagged it for $600. When it arrived two days later (the seller lives only about 250 miles from here) I was amazed at how lightly built and resonant it is with a rich bass and a bright, clear high end. Nice looking tobacco sunburst too. I’ve always been a little suspicious of Fender Guilds, but this guitar has completely changed my mind. This has to be the best impulse buy I ever made, and I've made a few that I've regretted. Here are some more pics.

The GAS has subsided for the moment, but now I can’t seem to put it down except to eat, sleep, and relieve myself.

Congrats on giving in!
Don't even try to fight the GAS, because in the end, it's a win-win. That's a great looking guitar.

Keep in mind that it's possible to eat and sleep with it and the best acoustics in my house are in the bathroom, so......

Enjoy,
Joe

That is a lovely 'burst, shepke. I gave $700 for mine in ex. condition, and felt like I stole it.

I really prefer the late (Fender era) Westerly and Corona D40's to the earlier Westerlies.

Enjoy!

Probably more like a 2003. I have a Hog topped flatback D25 from Corona...love it too....Congrats on a well thought out decision. Steffan

Yes - D40 = D35 with extras :D Interesting it is 'light' - I've held one Westerly built D40 and it weighs as much as my Westerly D35 - built like a tank :!: Corona must have cut the weight down. Nice guitar :D

Hi Jerry, I was also surprised at how light my Corona D25 was, that and my Larrivee, are the 2 lightest guitars I have. The F512R, is nice to play, but she's a heavy one..as is the F50R both over 30 years old....about 12 years older than me...  Steffan

It seems they got lighter while still in Westerly. My '99 is lighter than the earlier ones from Westerly. Exactly when they lost weight, I don't know. It would be interesting if one of the Westerly employees had some info on this.

Beautiful D-40; and at $600.00, you should have left a hefty tip...

Congratulations; and welcome to the D40 fan club...

Very, very nice. A $600 impulse purchase on a Guild D40? And here I am trying to be less impulsive. What the heck was I thinking? Good job!!

Ya, The weight really took me by surprise. I have a 1979 D-35 that's built pretty heavy and by comparison this thing is like a feather.

The seller told me he bought it new but almost never played it and that it's been sitting in his closet for years. well, it's getting a real workout now!

The seller also said it was 2005, and I just assumed he was right, but if Hans and taabru say it's 2003 or older so be it. Sharp eyes! What's the giveaway? the serial # is CVM 000646. I checked on the Guitar Nucleus site but the numbers only go to 1999.

I think Corona only built during later 2002, and 2003...put that way its kind of a no brainer..  Steffan

Yeah, sweet! That's like my DV-52, antique sunburst, which is more yellow/orange than the earlier tobacco sunburst. That's a really nice looking piece of mahogany on the back too :D Heck of a nice deal! Congrats
