The angels sing through my pearwood with exp 80/20's. Too bad it takes my buddy playing it too! Hahahaha. I have tried damn near everything on her (and have the receipts to prove it).

This topic makes me neurotic. I just put a set of D'Addario PB on the DV-52 and am in love with those most hated (until now) strings. The PB did for that guitar what the 80/20';s just weren't doing. Am I fickle, psycho, unpredictable? Only about guitar strings.... Go figure.

D'Addario PB medium strings are my go to strings and have been for many years.
I like to try other strings once in a while but I always go back to the D'Addario PB's.

I get them in bulk from a local music shop called of all things Local Music.

OK, I've given them just a couple of weeks to settle in, here's what I've done so far. I want you guys to know that I've actually flatpicked these too, so I'll give my novice opinion there, but primarily these were played fingerstyle.

The DR Sunbeams went on the JF65.

The JP 610 Silks went on the DV72.

Right now, everything else has JP 80/20 lights on them, except for the D30. It has Thomastick Plectrum lights there.

Maple guitars are just different to me, I discovered early on that I liked Plectrums on the maple D30....quite by accident by the way. The D30 was shipped to me with new Plectrums, and I loved the way they've felt. I've tried a couple of sets of JP80/20's on that maple guitar, and don't care for the tone or the feel there.....so I'm back to Thomastick Plecrtum lights there. I love 'em on that guitar......but not on any other maples, including the maple JF65 and the maple Prestige Classic.

On the JF65, since I've tried several sets of JP80/20's on it, and the Plectrums (Don't care for either there), I went with something completely different. I strung her with the DR Sunbeams. So far, so very good. These are the first strings I've played on this guitar that I liked.

On the DV72, I put the JP 610 Silks. Nice feel! Very nice sound. Having said that, for some reason, they don't seem to want to hold tune. More time maybe?....it's been two weeks, how long does it take to stretch strings?

Next guitar will be the D55. I'm giving myself 2 options there. I haven't tried these GHS strings and I've got two different GHS strings sets here, bright bronze and silk and bronze.....I'm considering the bright. Then again, I might save the "Brights" for the acoustic electric and try the Silk and Bronze on the D55.

Still experimenting.

I would agree with frettedstrings, however a D55 can become quite...er...boomy? And so the GHS Bright Bronze tend to equalize that a bit. Really like them on my D55, not so good on my Gibson J-30 (Sitka/Mahogany)... Allows the fingerpicking tocut through better, in my estimation. I am sure there are others (strings) that are similar.

Bill, I've heard that JUMBO Guitars tend to be on the boomy side. So, brighter strings seem to be inorder. I've never owned a JUMBO and I've always been trying to find that low end sound in my Dreads.

Fretted :? .....a couple of my rosewood dreads have more "low end" than any guitar I've ever heard. Do you have a rosewood dread? I fact, there have been times when I recorded that I tried to tone down the "low end" on them.

I am trying to treat the low end on my D55 like one is supposed to treat the EQ imbalance on a Rivera amp...too many lows?...add some more highs!

 There ya go Bill. It's a fight with the "Boom" everytime I try and record a rosewood guitar. I don't have that trouble with maples. But seriously, I don't really know what I'm doing when I record.....I just turn the bass down and hit the record button.

Ok guys, some of you know I'm a big believer in JP 80/20 lights on my rosewoods, so for the sake of reaching out and trying something new, I've got a question.

I'm stuck in the house for another month and searching for things to do that don't require a bunch of time on my feet. AHHH......change guitar strings

Now as I've mentioned, I love the JP's on my rosewoods and really like Plectrums on the D30, but I'd like to experiment. What strings really knock your socks off? Are there any out there that you guys swear make a discernable difference to you? I won't use mediums, so let's keep it to lights. I've been through tons of Martin Marquis and D'Addario, they're ok, in fact I like D' Addario on my JF30-12 and I've tried a bunch of Elixers. Has anyone tried GHS strings? Are there any really awesome stings out there I haven't tried?

West

OK, my only Guild (at present) has a mahogany body rather than rosewood, but I did notice something I found interesting concerning strings. I don't like Elixir strings on my Taylor (ironic, isn't it, since Taylors ship with Elixirs?) but I had a couple of sets laying around and restrung my D25 with them - and found that I like them a lot on my Guild. My opinion might be completely different with a rosewood-bodied Guild, of course...

That's just a marketing ploy, personally I think the Guild strings do not bring out the top performance of ANY guitar..
NOTE the effective year on that statement was 2001. At that time the strings were probably D'Addario PBs and I trust the gurus at Westerly to have chosen the best quality source for the budget they were given. Sometime very shortly after that the strings started being supplied by a Fender-owned source based in Mexico, according to previous reports on this Forum. Having experienced both, I say the Fender strings were inferior to the D'Addarios, which I still personally feel give the best sound on my guitars. I haven't tried some of the 80/20 suggestions yet, but was definitely unhappy with Martin 80/20's.

I've gone round and round with DR, GHS and D'Addario. In the end the GHS sound just fine to me and they are always cheaper. Beyond that I have a set on my banjo that have been there for 4 years(!) no rust, no breaks, still sound great , so they last. Right now I have a My Guild and all of my mandolins strung with GHS. The fiddles have Prims,

EJ17's are a good starting point. They are inexpensive, reliable and darn good. If you gig you may wish to change them after a long sweaty show or two but for home use they'll keep you going for a good while.

Wow, I think of 80/20s just the opposite, my experience the TWO times I tried them was that they were VERY bright for the first half of their life then went very mellow and dead quickly. I'm a flat picker BTW. Guess I'll have to try another set after I try out the PB Sunbeams Teem sent me to try (Thanks Teem)....

Yeah, I think I'd probably prefer PB's if I were a flatpicker too.

I think this is an interesting discussion. Myself I've noticed the PB has usually more bottom and are darker over all, yet have a harder edge in the trebles. 80/20 seems to feature less bass and the focus is shifted to the high mids and trebles, yet have a rather sweet highend, the alloy being softer.
