Hi all...
I know there have been lot's of threads for what is the best string...So this one is a bit more specific...What is the best string for all Hog Dreads?

I currently am using Daddario light PB's...the best so far...more string definition and subtle overtones are heard.
Great for fingerpicking and medium strumming.

You know, I've been contemplating a string change for my D15 and I just happen to have a new set of D'Addario Light PBs sitting right here. So, hats off to you for the idea. I haven't been ecstatic about the mediums that I put on just last week, so why not?

Thanks,
Joe

Hi Joe
I tried some mediums last week too and after a few days I found myself playing the guitar for hours trying to get it to sound like I knew it could...as soon as I put on the original strings that it came with (DAddarios pb lights)...whammo...there it was.
I am sure you will be happy with the string change.

I know you are all talking about Guilds but, I'll chime in. On my Martins I have found that the Vinci PB strings last well and produce the best tone. Now since I have started using a Fishman sound hole pickup, I generally stick to the lights but, if I am going to go play at a jam, I use the mediums for the extra punch they give and these strings will last almost as long as the coated strings and they last longer then any of the other regular strings. The big news, they are US Made and cost less then $ 4.00 a set with shipping. You can get them @ either Elderly's in Mich. or First Quality Music Supply in Louisville, Ky. Go to either Elderly.com or firstqualitymusic.com and search their strings. Don't let the price fool you these are excellent quality strings and they work very well.

In an earlier thread there was enthusiasm for JP PB New Mediums for D25Ms, which I will try at some point after the D25 arrives. Seller uses D'A PB Lights.

My hog d25 likes the D'Addario Bluegrass strings, top 3 light, bottom 3 medium......great sound, although, the guitar has a lot to do with that.  Steffan

What he said. In the Westerly era they were Guild's OEM supplier. Any questions?

Of course, the kind of music you play and whether you strum or pick has a lot to do with the strings you will like. I, for one, prefer using XL gauge strings (currently D'addario) as I find the "pinchy" quality of lighter strings combined with the punch of the all mahogany box gives me this lovely blues tone that makes me feel good.......

Absolutely...for heavy strumming or loud Bluegrass picking (as jimbo said) the mediums are an excellent choice.
For fingerpicking and light to medium strumming, the lights are great ... I have yet to try the XL gauge.
You may be onto something Steffan with the bluegrass set...as I tend to busk heavy and the heavier bass strings would handle it better.
Looks like I need two guitars?
Thanks for all of the other posts...a real wealth of information...so many strings, so little time! :D :D :D

I have only tried one set of the D'Addario strings and my Martins don't like them. They sound OK they just don't enhance that Martin tone as well as the Vinci PB or the Martin SP+ and both will out last the D'Addarios IMHO, but as I say I have Martins and I am some what acustomed to their sound and the D'Addario strings don't make the grade for me. Now for the big secret, when I first got my Martin I used GUILD PB MEDIUM GAUGE on it and they were absolutly the best until I tried the Vinci's later I found out that the same company that made the Guilds also made the Vinci's and I almost always used Guild PB on my F-212. The Guild strings are now Made by Fender and are not the same but the Vincis are still made the same way as they have always been. Like I said don't let the low price fool you they are top notch strings they just don't cost as much. And BTW I put my last set of Vinci PB Lgts on the F4-CE and they worked great. And 12stringer XLs are for the smaller bodied guitars like 000 Martins and small bodied Guilds like the M-20 they would be weak on a dread or Jumbo.

One of the guys at Washburn sent me some stuff, old catalogs, brochures, etc. That was in it.
