Hi folks, I have a 1966 Starfire III with the mini-humbucker pickups. Recently I started experimenting with cranking my amp up until it slightly overdrives and then backing off the guitar volume to get a nice thick but mostly clean sound for jazz and blues. It's really cool and has helped solve a problem I was having where the neck pickup is noticeably louder than the bridge pickup. I can now adjust the volumes so they're fairly well matched which is terrific.

The only surprise I'm noticing is that the neck pickup hums now. The hum goes away when I switch to the middle pickup position, but for the style of music I play I often want the neck pu alone. It's not a deal breaker but I'm just wondering if anybody has any insight as to why this is happening. Again, the problem is not in the amp as the hum goes away when both pickups are on, but I mostly play on the neck pickup so I'd like to fix this if possible.

Thanks.

I was originally gonna say maybe the neck pickup has a shorted coil, but that wouldn't make it inherently louder than the bridge pickup. Could be the coils are mismatched enough to let some noticeable hum through. I once played a Gibson 175 with PAFs that were both kinda noisy for this reason. Tonally it was an amazing guitar. Also could be the coils aren't wound in reverse polarity, either to begin with or via a rewind. This would give you the oomph of a humbucker but without the noise canceling.

I'd have someone who knows wiring take a look at it.
