Martin make some awesome guitars at ridiculous prices these days. However, I bought my daughter a Martin Starter guitar last fall, and I was astounded how wonderful this guitar sounded EVEN THOUGH IT WAS A PLASTIC GUITAR.
Got it for under $500, and it played like a dream right out of the box, and since it is a material like Formica, you don't have to worry about dinging it.
