I bought a B4CE a while back figuring I'd give it a try.

Well, it is not really for me and since there is a dearth of players in my area that I could practice with it gets rather lonely...ha...kind of like a bass player in a real band.

(duck)

I can give a pretty good description of an acoustic guitar, bridge/saddle height, action at 12th fret, fret condition, neck angle via the 2' straight edge etc.

Could you please let me know what a prospective bass purchaser would be interested in besides lots of good clear pictures?

I will certainly list it here first, it's in fine cosmetic shape with the original HSC.

Thanks!

Sorry to hear the bass didn't work out for you! That said, I think you've got most of the important points covered. Maybe just add in scale length and nut width. A lot of bassists buying online these days do seem to be very concerned about the weight of basses, but that likely wouldn't be as much of a point of interest here, since acoustic basses and guitars are inherently on the light end of the spectrum when compared to some solid bodies that weight upwards of 12 lbs.

Perfect,

Yeah good intentions...my wife actually got me signed up for guitar lessons again for my birthday in January...after many years and I've done 5 so far. Been fun.

Thank you for the feedback!!

It is common enough that a motivated buyer could find the factory specs. My concerns, then, would be deviations from specs. That would be cosmetic issues, play wear and whatever pictures and measurements I would use to assess the need for a neck reset. Pictures always help :)

As a tangent, a player I respected told me my B4CE needed a neck reset. They were sort of right in that the intonation really sucked but my luthier refused to do a neck reset immediately. Instead they handcrafted a new saddle that was sort of compensated and the intonation issues went away.

If the goal of bass playing is to make music with other people then the absence of other people is definitely a concern. But if you want to play bass for its own sake there are some solo things you could do. I might suggest learning how to play walking bass and then applying that to some jazz standards. You don't have to like or listen to jazz even thought it helps. Walking bass can be rhythmically simple - straight quarter notes in four four time - so you can concentrate on the chords you are supporting and where you are on the neck. More opinion available on that if you want it :)

It makes a big difference if the instrument has a sound hole cover. In fact, if you have two sound hole covers, sell me one! Seriously!
If you only have one sound hole cover, hang on to it, A rarity, so $$$ fer sure!

The correct cases are hard to find. My B4CE came with a deep, thick B4 case and you can see where a bad case fit put too much stress on the neck and it...cracked....sob!

If you decide to sell the bass, take pics of the case and, if there is one, the sound hole cover. Good luck.

Hi, did you ever sell the B4CE ?

Welcome. Get a few more posts and you can post in Wanted To Buy or ask nicely and a Mod can help.

As a former B4CE owner I'm curious about what you hope to accomplish with it? There were a lot of things I liked about it but ultimately I needed and acoustic bass guitar, not an acoustic bass with a pickup.

I'd love to learn from your experience. I am an upright string bass player that lives on a boat and had to give up the big girl as it wouldn't fit on the boat. I thought a U-Bass with an amp would do it for me but it is a hassle dragging the amp around. Practice on my own is no big deal but I do meet other acoustic guitar players and other musicians and like to jam. I am hoping to find an acoustic bass that has enough sound un amplified to hold up in an outdoor or close up setting with one or two other players. (not necessarily drums). So far my research has led me to the B4CE as one of the 'louder' and 'bigger' sounds in the acoustic arena.
thanks

OK. I bought my B4CE in part because I thought I wanted an acoustic bass. The primary use was backing up Mrs. Fro. while she was playing her D-25 (a cannon of an acoustic guitar). Think small room, 5-10 people and they are singing so we are the accompaniment. After a while I realized that I couldn't always hear myself and I, perhaps incorrectly, thought that was the case for every one. I upgraded to a B-50, sticking with Guilds and got more volume and projection. The cost was ergonomics. The B-50 is very large and it takes some experimentation to find comfortable playing positions. But people could hear me.

If the goal is unamplified, and a small number of acoustic instruments with you probably should give the B4CE a try. The worst that will happen is that you will decide to upgrade to a B30/B50. If I wasn't playing with Mrs. Fro. and accompanying choirs and congregations I probably couldn't justify the B50.

If space is an issue I would compare a B4CE to a little bigger than a guitar but a B50 in case as a little smaller than a cello :)

You might want to investigate compact amps. I have a Phil Jones Bass Cub (which is now the Bass Cub 1 since there is a Bass Cub 2 now). 2 x 5" speakers, size of a big shoebox and 14 lbs. It's not the only ultraportable bass amp out there. I have not used one but Blackstar battery powered amps seem to get good reviews so a small amp might be Plan B if the B4CE doesn't quite do it.

Cases for a B4CE can be awkward. There are cases besides the original that fit but they are bigger than they need to be so an original case is a plus. They do show up in the market but not frequently so patience is advised. Mine came from Artichoke Guitars at least a decade ago and the pics are still on the website. http://www.artichokeguitars.com/published/our_collection/acoustic_guitars_-_contemporary.html

Thanks for your detailed reply. I bet it would be tough to find a B-50 and with my space limitations, I'm going to continue my quest for the B4CE. I'd love a fretless but will take what I can find as they seem to be few and far between. Regarding the case, is it the arched back that makes it tough to find the case?

Given your space limitations I agree that a B50 should not be the first choice and might not even be feasible. If you wanted to rent a storage locker on land you could get one for the upright :)

Mine came in a TKL case that the previous owner had purchased. It was designed for a longer scale bass and so there was a lot of room around the headstock that was not needed. Those extra couple of inches made it harder to fit the case in a car trunk so I always resented them. The case was a touch deeper than it needed to be but the instrument did fit. To refine my comment you can get aftermarket cases but they are bigger than they need to be.

for never plugging in ever I would maybe buy a maple one. if u can live with the smaller imported Jumbo Jr bass, considering the task at hand this might be best:

even find a used one possibly for a lesser price, with some luck. or wait for black fri/cyber mon see how cheap u can get a new one.

I am far from an expert and there are other options i'm sure. and possibly the jumbo jr is not going to keep up unplugged...check one out if u
can thou

read the reviews in that sweetwater link. good luck
