Hello folks and thanks for the warm welcome!! I had posted this question to Scratch (Dave I think) and he gave me some great ideas so I thought I should post it out here. This is not a "this vs that" thread but more on info.....

Welcome Marty,

Vintage opens you up to a slew of small body Guilds. Currently available through Guild you can get a bunch as well. If you are looking for a wider neck (1&3/4" nut), then the STD F30 and STD F30R are new to the line up. They are OM sized. Other new guitars have a nut of 1&11/16" such as the F30 (mahogany b/s), F47 (rosewood), and F47M (maple).

On the vintage market, you can get parlors such as the F20 and M20, OM/000 sized F30 and F30R, as well as mini jumbos such as the GF series (GF25, GF30, GF60). Some will have flat backs with braces and others will be arched back. There is also an F65 which has a maple archback with an oval soundhole. I believe it may also have a thin body.

Tell us what you are looking for so we can help you narrow it down.

My avatar is a shortscale (24&3/4") F30

Thanks RM, I have always had a soft spot for MJ's and have toyed with short scale although have never tried one.
Probably around OM-MJ, hope this helps....Wood combination is not really an issue right now but lingers around EIR back and sides and either Spruce or Cedar top.

The new standard series F30R is a pretty nice guitar if you have the green. I do not know what they realistically sell for, but I would imagine around the price of a new 000-28, maybe a tad less. I have never seen or heard of a cedar top Guild.

An older F30R would be pretty nice for a shortscale and they pop up every once in a while. I believe the GF50/55/and 60 are all rosewood with flatbacks. The F47 will have a 16" lower bout as opposed to the 15" of the F30.

good luck

A local dealer has told me we can start price negotiations at 30% off MSRP for any new Guild from the New Hartford factory. That should put the street price of a Standard series F-30R at $1,900 or less.

I still love my A-50 SB. It's the only burst in the picture/avatar thingie...

Small solid rosewood body, spruce top, ebony bridge and fingerboard with snow-flake inlays, and gold hardware. Beautiful to look at, but even more fun to fingerpick. A local store advertised that they were a Guild dealer (after several years of no dealers in the area) so I stopped by, and Larry told me he'd just gotten a letter from Guild telling them that FMIC had bought them. He wasn't even sure he was going to get his opening order. Among the guitars was this sunburst beauty. And the first Guild I ever played was an old F-30R back in '73, so I'd been wanting a small rosewood Guild for 20+ years.

She went home with me on my birthday, serial #3.

And of course you are welcome to pop round to mine for a beer under the tree and play either my F30 or M20 anytime you like. (might pay to phone first though. )

Welcome along and good luck with your search.

Cheers, Ian

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the M20. You can an old one for less than 1K, maybe 600$ or 700$ if you're patient. They're all mahogany parlor short scale guitars that are ideal for strumming and studio recording. Mine is serial AH-2782, so around 1969 (anyone?), and it's a joy to play. Forget flatpicking on this sort of axe, but for songwriting and intimate work, wow, amazing. What do you get in a retail store for 1k today? Not much, and no mojo whatsoever.

Ok, sorry, a few people mentioned the M20, I'm dyslexic or something. But hopefully I still managed to add something helpful to the conversation!

As far as I know the only new M-20s that are being sold are the Guild GAD line. Those are the Asian imports.

PS: I see you have Garrison. I just learned about those. What do you think of it?

Hi Poser, I like it quite a bit, My wife bought me the G-10 (all solid Canadian birch) in 2002 for xmas when I first started playing the guitar. She picked it out herself and it has a beautiful flamed top. I had a LR Baggs element PU and a bone saddle installed and replaced the plastic bridge pins for ebony. It sounds and plays great. I think Gibson bought out the Garrison company.
