so this F-20 is the first to have a "martin like" bridge...

No, not really the first. Some of the lower line acoustic flat tops from the 50's, like the F-20, F-30 and F-40, already had what in the 'Martin universe' is referred to as the 'belly bridge'. A Martin bridge has a lot more mass than those early Guild 'belly bridges'. The design of the Guild 'belly bridge' changed a little over the years as well. If you take a look at the various photos in 'The Guild Guitar Book' you will notice some of the variations.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the replies, sweet looking guitars posted here, the one I was referring to was solid Mahogany and it slipped through my fingers, it was a great little guitar, but the owner had been watching to many antique roadshows and thought it was worth far more than I could or would have given him, oh well can't buy 'em all.

Hey Hans, could the bridge on Coastie's F20 be Brazilian rosewood? Sure is pretty. I know we've discussed timelines for the use of Brazilian rosewood many times, but if you don't mind one more question.

In the 50's and 60's, was Brazilian the rosewood normally used, or did they also use Indian mostly and use Brazilian sparingly even back then? Long before anyone was worried about the Amazon rain forests.

FYI, as a bit of follow-on to Hans' post... this is a '67 "cloud" rosewood bridge from my F-50R. Hans' book shows this type of bridge on Rick Danko's F-50Sb on page 105. I kinda' like it. :)

It's interesting how Guild went from the non-cloud bridge to this cloud-style and then back to the non-cloud design. I don't know if this cloud bridge was used on (m)any other models. More proof (as if any were necessary) of how creative the Hoboken folks were!
