Lack of snow is killing the ski season. December was the third driest winter since records started being kept in 1851.

Even snowmaking is minimal because temps are so warm. Golf, however, is great.

Same problem here in the northeast too, Bill. My skiing buddies are all keen for a trip, but still no snow in southern New England. :(

Symptons of the Global Warming, maybe?

Here in Chile, it's almost impossible to see rests of snow in the mountains. I travel almost everyday to Santiago, for study reasons, where a few ski centers are located, and in past summers you could observe, still in January, a not despreciable amount of snow... Not nowadays. Add to that the smog and it's almost impossible to see anything on the mountains... :(

Anyway, greetings from El Monte. All the best for 2012 :D

81-95" snow depth.

38 of 38 trails are open.

We had the driest December on record in SLC... a mere 0.1" snow. I was near 60F last week! WIsh I'd had time to go fishing (cause if we don't get some snow soon, there won't be any water come summer)!

And last winter had the most snowfall on record if I recall. You should have skied New Mexico. My daughters were out there abour 2 weeks ago and got about 10" of snow the first night in Angelfire.

I lived in an A-frame above Taos Ski Valley in the mid-70s, and I did ski Angel Fire a couple of times. Always found it hard to believe that New Mexico got so much snow!

My A-frame was on the 10,000' contour line so I was 'high' most of the time. 8)

Love Taos Joe. Last time we were in N.M., we spent about a week and a half in Santa Fe and took just 1 day to visit Taos.....we fell in love with the place. We didn't take th "high road", we took what was said to be the less glamorous route. I will never forget driving out from between the two mountains with my buddy and I in mid conversation.....total silence as we looked to our left across the Rio Grande valley and gorge. I couldn't believe my eyes.......right out of Lonesome Dove.....we had to stop! And the town of Taos is about the coolest little place I've been I guess. We've only been there in summer, but did drive up Taos ski mountain.

I guess N.M. and the Hill Country are our two favorite places to visit.

What were you doing there Joe?

Well, where to start.....
I had a gallery a block off the square and my photographs made up about 80% of the stock with the other 20% being a mixed bag of "arts and crafts" from other folks in town.

rt2010camii303.jpg

The building that was my gallery in the mid-70s! *Photo from 2010.

It was a 20 mile drive down the valley to open the shop and of course another 20 to get back up to the A-frame, so I let my partner run the shop more, because I wanted to roam the mountains all day/every day.
I had a darkroom up at the cabin and did all my printing, matting, and framing up there, too, so it wasn't all play. During the winter, I moved my photos around in several of the lodges and was on the ski valley security staff so I got to ski for free.
Believe it or not, as much as I loved it there, Colorado called and I answered. But that's another chapter for another day.

*This has been the Reader's Digest version of my time in the Land of Enchantment. We stopped in Taos last year (2010) after seeing you guys and man, has it changed! Still gorgeous though.

I'll take it. We've had very little winter here. I haven't fed anything yet. Still on winter grass.

No snow in northern New England. Very unusual storm with a lot of heavy, damaging
snow in October... but barely a flake since.
