Wikipedia says the promo happened in 1985, at which time another section of the Wikipedia page says they had less than 500 restaurants, down from the 2,500 they had in the 70s, when they were actually larger than McDonalds.

I can't find an absolute number of McDonalds in the time frame, but seeing as they have ~30,000 now I'm sure it was in excess of the 2,500 they had in the 70s. Burger Has about 20,000 locations. I lived within 30 miles or so of an A&W in the time period, and I don't recall ever seeing an advertisement for them.

I suspect it actually flopped because nobody noticed. </veer>
