I don't know what you call that thing Learnin', it almost sounds like a musical saw though. Noticed how they're capoed too.....top 4 strings......4th fret.

Re: Shear Beauty!

It's called an ebow. (ee-bow)

It's a battery-powered device that vibrates the string with a magnetic field. Kinda like a reverse electric guitar pickup.

You hold it near the string without touching it and the string vibrates. Kinda sounds like using a violin bow on the string - hence the name: ebow, as for electronic bow.

If you listen closely he hits a couple of klunker, out-of-key notes with it.

Actually, West, I believe she is only barring strings 3, 4, and 5. Unless I am see it wrong and it is the 4, 5 and 6th strings. Thats a shubb 'cut capo'. I didn't know that a 'cut capo' could be necessarily used at the 4th fret. I used my full capo and 'cut capo' almost exclusively, when I play. I tried playing with the 'cut capo' at the 4th fret, barring strings 3, 4 and 5 and the overtones are great.

I'd like to try one of those ebows, as well.

Bill Nelson was an early master of the eBow. Here's a cool track (WARNING - 80s New Wave Techno Dance Number) that highlights the eBow well:

I think an eBow is best used with an electric guitar. It doesn't generate the best attack or respond well with acoustic strings.

Jeeze, what a beautiful song. I like both versions. They're different. But they both work for me. The Trisha Yearwood/Keith Urban one is the SHIZZLE!! Thanks for posting those.

12,

With the 'cut capo' at the 4th fret, strum or pick a "C" Chord Shape. I really don't know what chord that is, but it is pretty cool sounding. Then from the "C" shape Chord, put your 2nd finger on the 5th string/ 2nd fret and then put your third finger on the the 6th string/ 3rd fret. Interesting sound.

Try the shape that would be Am7 and the shape for Em. I'm still trying to figure it all out. Have fun !

I was just going to write to say how AWESOME that ebow sounds when I saw Graham's post and fell off the chair laughing. Thanks Graham, that's the best laugh I've had in days.

But anyway, that ebow is intense.
