Serial Number with 'S'

I'm looking at a G312NT with a 6 digit serial number preceded by an 'S'. The number alone would date the guitar to the late 70's, which seems plausible. The list of Guild SNs I've seen online does not include any with an initial 'S' for that model (or any other). Does the 'S' mean it's a second? And if so, what does that mean: cosmetic screw up or imminent structural failure?

Thanks,
-Tom

Welcome to LTG!

Seconds I have seen on eBay were designated with a stamped red "2" on the label... or a few actually were stamped "factory second." I am sure Hans will know if the SN is a "second" designation, and pipe in if he sees this thread.

As for cosmetic flaw or imminent failure... after 30 years, I doubt "imminent failure" from a construction flaw. In my mind, the fact that it's around after 30 years suggests a cosmetic flaw... which may be entirely insignificant in the context of 30 yrs of play wear. But, I'd be sure and ask all the important questions re: structural and playability issues...

Welcome.

I've never heard of Guild adding an S to a serial number to indicate a second. I'm with Grot and asking whether it could be a 5? Also, the serial number should be on both the headstock and the paper label which might help clarify things.

Tom, welcome aboard.

Also, is there a number stamped into the back of the headstock? It should match.

Post some pictures if you can.

I haven't seen the guitar in person yet, the only info I have comes from the seller. I guess it could be a 5, but that would make it a 7 digit number 5159xxx, which does not correspond to anything on the list of Guild serial numbers I have found online.

The G312 was made mid-70s to mid-80s I believe, with 6 digit numbers up to 78 and numbers starting with 'DJ' from 79 on. Have they reintroduced the model recently?

Thanks,
-Tom
