There are two serial numbers I would like to have checked out. Both f-30's. The first one #199198 ad says 1979? The second is # AF 800131 '94/'95. Thank you in advance for your time and help.

You can check those numbers and models on the Guild website. You can also PM hansmoust for confirmation (He's also the best source for post-'97 dating if you're ever in the need.)

Here's another site to check http://www.dancipsax.com/iserialguildguitar.html you can see those numbers and dates look about right

Any reason to use http://www.dancipsax.com/iserialguildguitar.html instead of http://www.guildguitars.com/resources/guild_dating.php ?
As far as I can tell the information content is the same. Am I missing something?

Hello glazed67,

Forget about those two dating sites. They are pretty much the same and are OK for general dating but they both contain a lot of mistakes and some things you will not find at all.

The first one with ser. # 199198 is indeed from 1979.

There are a couple of things I need to say about the second one:

First of all, the serial number should be # AF300131 but I can see how the first 3 may look like an 8.

Secondly, you need to check if the guitar they are selling is an F-30CE or an F-30. They are completely different instruments.
If it's an F-30CE, the instrument is from 1994 but if the guitar is an F-30, then the guitar is from 1998.

In case the second guitar is an F-30 from 1998 you need to keep in mind that this version of the F-30 is a reissue of the '60s version of the F-30. It will have an auditorium size body, pretty much like a Martin 000-size.

The first guitar you mentioned, the F-30 from 1979, is more like a 'small jumbo' with a deeper body.

So, ask for photos and ask questions so you know what you're buying.

Good luck!

Sincerely,

Hans Moust

Thanks everyone and Hans. Hans, thanks as always for the great info. I saw some pics, it appears to be an f-30. It does have a pick-up and pre-amp, but no cutaway.

Strong language :)

I actually asked the "which site" question because I knew there were errors and omissions in the "official" site and wondered whether they had been corrected anywhere. The answer would appear would appear to be "No" and "Wait for Volume II"

Thanks.
