There's been a LOT of publicity about Steve Miller's recent rant on the R & R Hall of Fame and his induction. I have heard, over the years, many artists rag on the HOF. Joni Mitchell was very verbal about her horrific encounter and even wrote a song about it. So I kind of tend to agree with most bad publicity regarding the HOF.

But then the Rolling Stone publishes a small interview with the Black Keys and their impressions of the whole thing and how disappointed they were with Steve Miller and now I just don't know. I can see both sides. Not sure an award show or induction ceremony is the right place to rant. But then..... where is?

This is the article in Rolling Stone, complete with Steve Miller's comments HERE.

What do y'all think? I'd like to hear some input.

In a record like everybody else?
Then it even gets airplay based on notoriety.
Controversy sells, wanna argue about it?
:biggrin-new:
I can see both sides too.

I think Miller should have just not gone to the ceremony if he was that ethically challenged about receiving an award. Levon Helm boycotted his award ceremony, but he was pretty sick at the time so travel would have been tough. I can see where other artists would have been disappointed or at least, look dude, your comments are not really pertinent right now, let's discuss it outside of the event, etc. A lot of his peers no doubt agree with him, but I guess why bite a hand that feeds you. Way bigger fish to fry.

If it were me, I would choose not to go to the HOF, rather say yes to the Kennedy honors lifetime achievement awards. The HOF will just become more and more of a joke to me as the years progress as these older bands fade and the newer ones I couldn't stand become the older bands. To be fair, I have never watched an Academy Awards show either....

That was a great link, Tom. Those guys were very articulate in voicing their disappointment - I feel for them! It must suck to meet one of your heroes and realize he's an a$$ho1e. And they made a great point about the Hall that I did not realize (or forgot), that it's more than the ceremony, it's a place to visit with exhibits, they have workshops, etc.

I still feel the "process" of choosing inductees is greatly flawed (a"joke" even), but I have to agree with the Keys regarding Miller, and their interview was really thought provoking. As tx said, just don't go if it bothers you that much!

Yeah, he could've just not attended. There's this thing called being GRACIOUS. You don't have to believe in the award or nomination, but ..... just be nice. And how could he be so self-involved that he doesn't know who the Black Keys are? It's disappointing.

Like Al says, you could voice your discontent in a song, but I doubt that Miller is actively writing songs these days. Maybe, but probably not. The Black Keys are though..... now they have material!!

I have no idea who the Black Keys are. Now , I have to go look them up. I learn about new groups and players all the time.

The Rock & Roll HOF itself is well worth a visit if you're in the area.

While I think the process of getting into the RRHOF is more arbitrary than it could be, I also agree that Steve Miller should've either been more gracious about it or not attended at all.

Also, I dig the Black Keys. :)

You guys who never heard of The Black Keys must be acoustic guys. This guitar has got a lot of attention in the last few years:

but I've never heard of them either.
Wow, I'm mildly surprised because Auerbach's been mentioned here several times for that Thunderbird, but also have to admit that if it weren't for a local "Classic Rock" station I might not know who they are, either.
I like to think of 'em as getting "retro" into modern/alternative rock.
Kinda like what Volkswagen did for cars with the "new Beetle" but w-a-a-y cooler.
If you liked garage rock I think you'd love the Black Keys.
