Cheap Trick Saginaw, Michigan Temple Theater last night. Looks like a twelve string hollow body model

I wonder what happened with his old Fender XII? Looks like one of the import Starfire XIIs.

Tom Petersson (sp?) on 12- string bass, too!
He was the one who really developed them. Others have dabbled with 8 strings before (John Entwistle used one in Trick of the Light) but Tom was the one who put on another string per course and used it as his main instrument. He also split the sound between bass and guitar amps. It’s a glorious sound when you do that.

I’m not sure if it’s 8-string or 12-string but the intro to “He’s a Whore” from their debut album has a few seconds of just bass licks and sounds fabulous!

Sorry for the veer…

I had a few minutes to inspect and play a Hamer 8 string bass and a Hamer 12 string bass. I could not figure out what to do with either of them. Things might have been different if I had ever used a pick and tried one but for me they were a different instrument in a way that a 5+ string bass was not.

What are you seeing that suggests a new one rather than a vintage one? I'd make the same guess based on availability but am wondering if there are visual clues as well.

Yes, you definitely need a pick for the 12 string basses the way they’re set up. When we did our Cheap Trick concert (with my students) I picked up a surprisingly decent Dean 12 string bass.

While the stage lighting may alter the color, it looks like one of the Shoreline Mist Guild SF XII. The finish is too uniform and smooth to be vintage, to my eye.
While Robin certainly uses vintage guitars on stage, like his Tele and Ric, they tend to be ones that he’s had and used since the 70s.

Oh, also a sure sign that's it's one of the newer imports. Tuneomatic style stoptail rather that harp tailpiece.

Greg Lake was another player who experimented with eight strings (Alembic) that many don't know about - check the "Fanfare" video in Montreal's olympic stadium. A great musician in my opinion

But Petersson is the undisputed daddy of the twelve string bass - I guess Jol Danzig had already gotten used to Cheap Trick's outlandish requests
