Yet another waste of talent and beauty, thanks to character weakness / wrong entourage leading to drug abuse. What a shame.
Her stuff was never my cup of tea either, but it was easy to hear talent and quality in her singing.
One of the best female singer I've ever heard.
RIP indeed Whitney.

The only song I remember hearing her sing was "I will always love you". She had a set of pipes that's for sure.

Too bad drugs ravaged her life.

RIP

ABC News this morning showed a picture of her attending some pre-Grammy Awards celebrations. Given her ongoing struggle with substance abuse it appears that may be the answer to what happened and - sadly - no one will be surprised.

Here she is looking a little rough after singing at a night club Thursday night (from TMZ) - probably the last pics before her death:

Definitely not my style, but I do remember a lot of her music since she achieved her fame during the time when MTV actually played music videos. Growing up in the '80's, I watched A LOT of MTV.

Whether you like her music or not - what a voice!

RIP.

I will choose to remember Whitney from her magnificent 20s. Sigh, she was truly a candle in the wind. RIP, Whitney.

I agree. Early on she was a real breath of fresh air in pop music, but apparently she had the addictive personality trait that all too often leads down this tragic path. What a waste.

Just a waste of a great voice.
I was not a fan, but I could appreciate her soaring vocals and great rang.
It is all too common to hear of a famous and talented musician, singer or actor succumb to the effects of drug abuse.
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

RIP Whitney, RIP.

No doubt she had immense talent and a sad life. What was really bizarre was Tony Bennett was on the news today, in responce to Whitney's death. He was calling for the legalization of all drugs; so that we can get safe drugs, rather than buy them off the street.

Will someone please take 85 year old Tony, and former cocaine addict, back to the home. Thank you

Folks, let's try not to turn this thread from a tribute to a great voice, to a debate on substance legalization, which is highly politically charged, thanks....

Tom, I don't want to go all political on this discussion, but I'm in Tony's camp on this subject. Anyway, that's a pretty much out-of-bounds discussion here on LTG, but someday we'll talk about it over a beer. 'till then, RIP Whitney.

Thank you for the citizen's moderation, bluesy!!!! Couldn't agree more.

Oddly, I didn't see your post when I posted mine... Usually the board software shows posts that occur while you're writing your own. Interesting.

Keef states in his biography that he's alive because he could afford the very highest quality drugs. I'm with T.B. Drugs are never going to go away.

When you make poor decisions in your life, unfortunately, you get poor results. That applies to everyone, rich or poor. That is a rule of life!

Not to be a mean spirited and offend "thin skins", but would you be more surprised if she lived to 80 or died at 48? I think we know the answer.

Sorry, I have absolute no empathy for someone who spent probably tens of millions of dollars on drugs and millions more for treatment, when there are so many people that really need, through no fault of their own.

For her sake, I hope she found peace.
