He was brilliantly funny and super clever. His pretend being a knucklehead or obtuse management of the flow of this show was genius. He was always smarter than his guests, but he never condescended. That takes real class and brain power.

I am very sorry to hear this, a truly funny man.
They were so squeaky clean, yet they brought "controversial" guests on their summer replacement show,
and made no secret of their censorship battles with CBS.
A well deserved rest.

I recall watching their TV program when it was on the air, back in the day. RIP Tommy.
I did not know until today that Tommy played on the recording of John Lennon's "Give Peace A Chance" in 1969

I remember when we asked about them 10 years later the teachers considered them as "problem students".
But to be fair, we always thought some of the Gestapo expats that didn't move to Argentina wound up as teachers and administrators at
RUHS...

Tom Smothers just passed away. This photo appeared on the NYT obit page. Not totally sure of the model. Is it a D55?

Yes, actually I think he had a prototype of what would become the D55. Memory might be off on that one, however.
