If you're a fan of one of the unique guitarists of our time, I highly recommend the Homespun DVD, "the Guitar Style of Richie Havens." I've checked this out of the local library so many times that I finally broke down and picked up my own copy.

This is an intimate, playing/teaching video hosted by Artie Traum, but mostly it's Richie with his D40 for 85 minutes. Just wait until you hear the sounds coming from his guitar. He has great things to say about Guild! He also wrote the foreword for Hans' book and voiced similar thoughts there. Sit back and enjoy a guitarist for the ages and an exceptional, often spell-binding video. His huge hands probably played a part in the development of his own style.

**I don't work for Homespun or Amazon, so this is NOT a paid promo. It's just an opportunity to share with fellow GAS sufferers. Try not to emulate Richie, though--you could hurt yourself!

Cheers,
Joe

Thanks for the info. Ritchie Havens is still touring both the U.S. and Canada. Seems music is one of those things that just keeps you going.

I've tried some of his open D stuff...certainly harder than it looks. If my thumb was an inch longer maybe....

The first real concert I went to as a young guy was to see Richie. It was 72 and there must have been 5000 people there. Some 15 years later I saw him in a small club with maybe 200 in the crowd. Same intensity. Hope to catch him again soon. The story about him opening Woodstock is amazing. They couldn't get any of the acts to the stage, so they asked him to grab his guitar, flew him in in a helicopter to start it out and he had to "fill" for a couple of hours Truly a unique talent.

He leaves you shaking you're head, thats for sure. He really influenced my style too, that rhythm/strumming is just incredible....and if you ever have a chance to pick up or listen to his 1st album, Richard P. Havens.......well....you'll think there are 2 or 3 guitars in his hands,.. Steffan

Richie and Leo played a free outdoor concert a few years back down in Albany after leaving a Portland show. Quite a treat!

The great thing about this particular DVD is that it's JUST Richie in a quiet studio setting. You get to hear that great Guild sound (with headphones...hang on to your socks!) and watch close-ups of his ring-studded fingers. And yes, that is one long thumb!!
Best ever version of "Just Like a Woman." :D

Get it, enjoy it,
Joe

Is it me or does that guitar top look pretty good at about the 1 minute mark, (freedom, the one that started it all) and then 5 years of wear on it as he is walking around with it near the end....man, that guy is hard on guitars....they should find out what that pick is made from  .......and make cars from it.   just love Richie...Steffan (who also noticed a lack of uppers in this great musician)
