Hello, folks! Long time no see. Has anybody replaced stock Schaller tuners (that 70s S-300 originally came with) with other tuners without the necessity of drilling new holes?

These stock Schallers just go out of tune after 3-4 days. Was thinking of replacing them but I'm not sure what to replace them with since I don't want my guitar guy to drill new holes and I'd be interested in a simple drop&swap kind of thing.

Hey Vadim, how are things with you?

What is the gear ratio of tuners? I think on one of my 70s Guild it is something like 7:1 which seems ridiculously low & makes accurate tuning difficult.

Often though the issue isn't tuners but the string slots cut into the nut. Best to get that checked before swapping tuners.

Also if you are getting temperature fluctuations where the guitar is stored then that will affect the strings & hence tuning.

Good to hear from you Vadim! Are those the tuners your S-300 has? I have no answer for you but think it helps to know how they looked like.

By the way Ken Nash has the original tuners but very expensive. http://www.theguitarmechanic.com/GuildTuner.html

Nice to see you back for a visit, Russian Guy.

How ya doin', Vadim?

Cheers folks! Everything is a-OK, well apart from currency exchange rate which makes everything gear-related 2,5 times more expensive than it was in early 2014 making buying stuff a real bitch. As a result my GAS was a 100% dormant throughout 2015.

Zelja, I'm pretty much clueless as to what the gear ratio these Schallers have. I do know that 14:1 and 16:1 make for a way finer tuning. Also I had my '62 Epiphone Coronet equipped with new TonePros Kluson tuners and they have 15:1 ratio according to the TonePros page. And that Epiphone stays in tune forever.

Ralf

Yes Ralf, those are the exact tuners that I have, Schaller-made Guild-branded tuners.

P.S. I think if we get Hans to chime in he might provide some valueable info on these. Paging Hans :)

Hey Vadim, nice to see you back around. The Schaller M6 will be a direct drop in replacement.

^This. The Grover minis will have a different footprint. Any full-size Schaller M6 will be a direct swap. Also, nice to see you around, Vadim!
