Hey guys sorry I haven't been active lately...work and all...also quite active playing out lately...getting ready to go into studio to record some originals (now THAT was unthinkable until this year...!). Anyway...my question to the gurus...what tuners to replace the ones on my '76 D25? The old ones slip a lot and I have a hard time really accurately dialing them in. My D25 has the 3 on a plate and I don't want to drill new holes or disfigure the headstock...thanks for any advice!

I reckon a set of open back Grover statites or similar would work, you may have to drill holes but I think they would be covered by the original plate if you ever sold the guitar and put the old set back on.

Curious as to why Guild went with the three-on-a-plank design for the D25...awfully hard to find a matching replacement/upgrade in this config. The Grovers with the 18-1 ration seem great, but I wonder how much mod will be required to the headstock...tho I am not concerned with resale etc...never letting this one go! BTW the guitar is at Fretworks right now getting the K & K mini installed...listened to a Seagull dread that had just had one put in and it sounded fabulous...sold me...doesn't hurt that it's what Tweedy uses...

Remember the D25 was supposed to be an "entry level" guitar despite the fact that it holds it's ground next to most $1500 + guitars, so I guess it was a decision based on the final price tag targeted for this puppy....
However, I must point out that I do not have any issue with my original 37 years old ones, that are still doing a perfect job dialing and holding.....

Ping tuners on my F112, fit in the holes, used original screws for a better fit, the new screws were slightly narrower......Larrivee and several other companies also use Ping. They might be a direct fit. Mine work very smoothly, and hold everything in tune. :D Steffan

CWG, forgive me if this is a dumb question, but have you tightened the screws in the center of the gears and lubed the gears a little? That can work wonders sometimes...

I think I like the plate mount Klusons even better than the vintage style plate-mounts. My 1961 A50 has the same Kluson plate-mounts on it, so I think these would look fine on a D25.
I don't like the idea of attaching individual tuners as a replacement for plate-mounts. There will more more tell-tale signs that the instrument has been modified.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

I've had Dan at Fretworks order a set of the Klusons...I like that they're 3 on a plank and have the metal buttons...they should keep the guitar looking pretty much the same as with the old ones--I just couldn't see it with ivory buttons--and let me dial in more accurately. Thanks for all the suggestions!

In vino veritas, indeed.

I really like the no-frills look of these.
With the white/cream knobs?

Actually, I liked the look of the tuners themselves so much that I didn't pay attention to the knobs. OK, I guess, but metal knobs matching the tuners would be the cat's arse,I think.

Accept no compromise....look for the ones that really float your boat, or the ones that are "the cat's arse."

Good choice, I take it all the measurements are the same? As Norm Abraham would say measure once, then once again, then once more!!!!

Thanks...the guys at Fretworks say they'll fit just fine with no drilling, so I'm happy with the choice...!
