I have a '65 Thunder 1 with the gold grille cloth. I'd like to replace the cloth with the tres cool two-tone cloth like the one below.

I don't imagine the original cloth is still available, but I'm wondering if two cloth types could be sewn together. Any ideas? Anyone tried it?

Re: Replacement two-tome grille cloth

Can't help you F but, I've wondered more than once how that's done. I've grill cloth-ed quite a few speaker baffles now, and it's never a routine job getting grill cloth straight and square.

I can't imagine how you'd sew the cloth and keep the pattern as straight as that. Certainly, prior to sewing, the edges are folded away somehow to avoid the very high fray factor.

Perhaps an enquiry on a Sewing / Crafts forum ? You say Ozzie blokes don't do sewing forums ??

Couldn't you 'weld' them together with heat?...??

We don't even do spelling! I hope my edit of two-tome to two-tone works. Otherwise I'll have to do it two tines. Fork that.

Actually Coastie, with the Rugby World Cup on I am feeling distinctively Kiwi and a little homesick.

Yes, I guess sewing forums would be the go. I wonder if one thickness of each cloth type could be neatly sewn to an under-layer of one of the cloth types. There might be a special type of stretch stitch required.
For heat welding would to work I imagine it would have to a special type of material and even then, I doubt it would impart the kind of strength required for a stretch fit.
Of course, the ideal would be if someone had just happened to find a roll of the original grill cloth in an old warehouse somewhere.

How about some spray paint?
Okay; here's some:

Assuming the pattern was available, the material would be 'man-made' polymers ... I wonder how well spray-paint would stick ... especially over time where the amp is vibrating? Might work ... might not ... but I think straight black is out there in the aftermarket:

... and black goes with anything ... day or night ...

The capn and I had an idea where we tried vinyl dye on knobs. The results were less than successful, but you might be able to spray silver grille cloth with the dye and get a similar result. It's at any auto parts store. If you make stretcher frame and mask off the silver area, using painters tape on both sides of the cloth, you might be able to make a pretty good facsimile. Coastie, do you have any scraps of grillecloth that you could try this on?

All the grillcloth I have is "lumpy" and I think would be nigh on impossible to mask successfully.

Intriguing subject this ! Hope we get a result.
