Huge MAD magazine reader as a kid, I still have a collection of all the MAD Specials.

Jaffee's Fold-In, "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions, and his sort of "blueprints" of gadgets were some of my favorite features.

RIP

Al Jaffee and his ‘usual gang of idiots’ were a big part of my childhood. I learned a lot about life in general from Mad’s zany take on the world. They never took anything too seriously; a good outlook for the modern world.
RIP Al, you done good.

...and who could forget 43 man Squmish?

The Rules of 43-man Squamish

  • Each team must have 43 players
  • Games consist of 7 Ogres (8 if it rains that day) that are 15 minutes long
  • All Players must wear the regulated uniform, a Helmet, Gloves, Swimming Flippers, and is equipped with a Frullip
  • Before play begins coin flip (of a Spanish Pesta) must take place, and if the visiting captain guesses correctly, the game ends
  • Play then begins after the Frullip of the advancing team is touch to the Fluteny and “Mi too es enfermo per la carretera es verde” is chanted.
  • Hitting the Pritz across the goal line is a Durmish and scores 11 points
  • By carrying the Pritz across the goal line is a Woonillk and scores 17 points
  • In the 7th (and 8th if it rain) only Niblings and Overblats are allowed to score
  • Each team has 5 snivels (similar to downs in football) to get the Pritz across the goal line
  • If their is a tie a sudden death match must begin, but if both left overblats are out of the game, dirty limericks are to be shout from opposite ends of the field until one team breaks up laughing

This is both sad and not sad new. 102 is quite the age to live to, and most people approaching that age are ready to go and hope for a peaceful death.

My mother's family is both blessed and cursed by longevity and is also seemingly immune to the mental diminishment which can mute the discomforts of age. People live into their hundreds quite regularly, and it is not always good for them. My mother died last year at the age of 93, early for her family. She was sharp as a tack mentally and still with a heart like an ox, but she was in severe discomfort and very much ready to go. She had attended the funerals of all her friends and realised that there would be none of them left to attend hers.

I was also a MAD fan as a kid, as was my wife.

But the biggest current fan I know my son. He has a collection of older mags, and, as a pre-teen, he saved up his allowance to buy the multi-CD-volume set of the entire back catalogue of the magazine to that date.

Wood did hilarious, Mad Magazine send-ups of Bat Man, Superman, Prince Valiant and Brando's "The Wild One", among others. His drawings were always filled with endless detail.

Two other stand-out MM illustrators whose work I especially enjoyed were...

Don Martin:

and Basil Wolverton:

Wood's science fiction work for EC was mind blowing, but he could do humor just as well.

Here's a quote I love from Patti Smith: "After MAD, drugs were nothing."
I know about Wood mainly because my favourite science fiction writer, Harry Harrison, worked a lot with him early on in his career, when he was an illustrator.
