Some of you know that I work for a software company that is embedded in the music business. We don't build instruments; we provide data to the rest of the music "ecosystem."

Anyway, I have had some ridiculously talented colleagues over the years and a couple of these folks have left my company and created "Groove Synthesis" where they just introduced a new synthesizer at NAMM. This thing blows my mind in its capabilities, and thought I'd share it with you. I'm very proud of them for getting out on their own and doing their thing.

Below are two of my former work colleagues presenting their handiwork at NAMM this year, and the link at the bottom is to their website for the company formed around this thing. It's just awesome if you ask me. Back in the day, I spent a lot of time working with a Roland D-50 synth, and this Groove beastie is like from another world. My, things have come a very long way since then.

This is Andrew giving a brief presentation:

This is Bob doing a lot more in-depth:

Here's the website where there are many, many sound samples and it's just amazing. Ironically, I tried to get a job with Kurzweil music instruments about 25 years ago, and had that worked out my life would've changed... These guys are doing it now. :) Jealous? Yeah, maybe a bit (or a little more than a bit). :)

Holy cow! That's an all-around super synth that brings back some pretty classic 80s sounds. It looks and sounds like a blast. Good for them! It seems pretty affordable for the range of what it can do.

I wish them lotsa luck. That's a crazy competitive space to venture into.

Thanks for posting, Chaz!

I've been using synthesisers in the 80s, but I had to stop at some point...I'm not aware anymore of what the situation is like now with synths, but I find this very interesting...I presume your friends and colleagues are not working on guitar synths at the moment ? I sometimes feel like getting a guitar synth at some point (my 1st one as at the time I had been practising with keyboards only). Never had the money to take the step at the time though, and for now I haven't heard anything that sounded innovative and simple enough (I have to say nobody seems to be much into it round here either). I wish a lot of success to your friends, and that the instrument meets today's musicians needs...I will keep watching and listening ! Nice to see someone here knows that field and has friends working in it...

Hey, Bernie,

I don't actually know if Groove intends to do anything except keyboards. One of the innovations they've brought to the field is the software to build/incorporate your own wave tables easier (apparently) than it's been in the past. I imagine that requires a lot of use of the switches and knobs on the platform, but I don't really know for certain.

Anyway, both Bob and Andrew are very creative guys, and I take it that their colleagues are as well. If they feel they have something to bring to the guitar synthesis market, who knows what'll happen? :)

I have no idea how they can make something like that. Really amazing. I surely don't build synths. I just play 'em. 😁 Here's one of my, uh, weirdest "tone poems"... a full 1 min 38 sec....

^ Cougs, that's really quite beautiful. Not weird at all! Thanks for sharing that!!!

What kind of gear did you use for that? Was it a PPG synth? If so, that's the fundamentals that the Groove is based on.

Thanks, Chazmo. That's the Yamaha Motif XS7. Yamaha seems to come out with some new "sound engine" every once in a while. I can't keep up with the tech. I kind of lean toward voices that simulate actual instruments. I think I was sold on the Motif because of its guitar voices. 😁
