Another aspect of the game is, you have to get over the son getting involved in the game. An automatic tryout to the top, not only in sports, but everything, i.e., actors, newscasters, musicians, CEOs, politicians, etc. It has become "Royalty", the very thing we got away from, all those years ago.
A free ride for some.

Sorry to sound like an old curmudgeon, but this pandemic has given me a lot of time to reflect on what is important and what really is not.

When you consider how playing sports for a couple of decades destroys your body, I can't begrudge the money.

Where does posting in internet guitar forums fall on that continuum?

(I'm sorry...I couldn't resist. I'm really done now.)

I just think our priorities are askew, and pro sports are a prime example of this paradox.
Sports are not the culprit, it's called "capitalism", and for the record, I'm NOT an anti-capitalist, but just making an "apolitical" statement here:
If knitting was popular enough to bring crowds of thousands willing to pay between $50 - $100 to watch the action for a couple of hours, then my grand mother would have been a multi millionaire I'm sure, and some would then have claimed that our priorities were askew.
Problem is no one is interested enough to pay for the right to watch a plumber unclog a toilet, a mechanic replace a head gasket, a fireman put out a fire or a teacher teach is class. Bummer I agree, but that's the world we live in, and something tells me that it ain't about to change (in that regard) anytime soon.

I vote for the spandex!!

By the way, I don't like cilantro, or cumin, or most sports with overpaid athletes. Give me an equestrian event, a dance competition, or talented musicians anytime!

Or spandex.

I was a head coached at a large high school for 33 of the 40 years I taught school. Somewhere along the late 80s, many athletes thought they were "entitled."
It starts with little league and Jr. Pro coaches and continues through into the pro ranks. Coaches discipline average players and give superior players a "second" chance because "they deserve a second chance." Bunch of bull. Even at the youngest level of competition, the almighty "win" takes precedence. I am gonna stop because I could lecture on this subject at the graduate level. Many coaches scared to "Coach" a good player because afraid the good player will quit. Simple - everybody touches the lines, works hard, respect teammates and opponents and be on time. After we can do that, we will learn the fundamentals of the game.
I got dozens and dozens of great stories.
Would like to hear some of those stories. Sounds like you were a really good coach.

Mike Trout got a $426,000,000 dollar contract. Almost half a billion dollars. Absurd. But that isn't what has turned me off to pro sports...it's the politics, taking a knee, BLM banners and other such nonsense. The plandemic has indeed given me plenty of time to reflect on more important things...like practicing guitar. The MLB, NFL and NBA are going to have a hard time paying all those outrageous salaries with so many former fans tuning out.

Pro sports are dead to me. I don't follow 'em, I don't watch 'em, I don't care any more.

Why is it that our cops, teachers, pastors, servicemen and women, etc. have to struggle to make ends meet while we play men multi-millions of dollars per year to play with a ball, and call them heroes? That is really screwed up if you think about it...

not to mention all the politics jammed down our throats by the 3 main leagues. sports is supposed to be a place to go to get away from all the noise and enjoy a game. now, it has infiltrated everything.

I bet Curling is still politics free :) I might start getting into that.
