Both male and female pop stars die 25 years sooner than average...not a huge surprise but this Washington Post link has a couple of graphs that really tell the story:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...-of-pop-stars-die-in-their-mid-50s/?tid=a_inl

For them, their 50's are the most likely time they'll die. Even advances in medicine over the last 50 years have only raised their life expectancy a few years.
Wow, from the article:

"Across the seven decades studied, popular musicians’ lifespans were up to 25 years shorter than the comparable US population," Kenny writes. "Accidental death rates were between five and 10 times greater. Suicide rates were between two and seven times greater; and homicide rates were up to eight times greater than the US population."

Wow, again.

This was a shock. A musical giant, prlific songwriter, great guitarist, charismatic to the max, always owned the stage, such a talented individual. RIP

The statistical question I have is why 2016? This has been a really bad year for musical artists passing away, and it's still early...

Yeah and Lonnie Mack noted this AM too.
I started wondering is this spike in the deaths of so many of our heroes is simply mathematically inevitable because so many of 'em arrived and blossomed during the era of the explosion of mass media(TV/radio) and baby-boomer market size?
I was thinkiin' instead of this being "the day the music died" it's been more like "the year the music died".
Prince actually won me over with "When Doves Cry" and the "Purple Rain" movie after I was turned off by the image being promoted, looked like just another Hendrix wanna-be to me at the time.
Shortly after that I realized Hendrix ripped off Little Richard's costuming early on, and it's just all part of show-biz, and it's all good..

I think this has a lot to do with it. If so it'll continue for awhile too. The downside of growing up during a time with so many slightly older (for me anyway) creative people at the height of their powers is that they eventually die on us. :(

"Drugs" was listed as part of accidentals, and I also think that long-term effects are probably not easily compared to something like "overdoses"..
Still, good article, thanks for posting.
Raises interesting questions about why jazz and world musicians have such a high cancer rate and blues musicians don't, when you'd think there'd be a lot of exposure in "smoke-filled clubs".
But sure enough they do have an extremely high rate of broken hearts....(sorry, couldn't resist)
At any rate, anybody who dies younger than me these day died too young.

Prince performing unplugged with a purple acoustic - the whole thing is great, 8 minutes of funky acoustic playing!

I've seen this one before and I really like it....the man and his guitar, sitting on a stool and making great music. He was a player, no doubt about it. . :encouragement:

Back in the '80s, when the purple Taylor(s) that were built for Prince were shown in his vids/movies, you wouldn't see Taylor on the headstock. :) But, there you go. His talent really shines through in this video... Thanks for posting it guys. Got a tear in my eye.

Give this a listen/watch (the video is incidental) and then consider if taking up an instrument other than electric guitar might not be a bad idea. It's a nearly 20-minute long version of Purple Rain with guitar playing that an online acquaintance of mine describes as "serious Maggot Brain/Pharoah Sanders territory." Holy Moly!

Yep - Eddie Hazel's guitar playing on "Maggot Brain" is a good analogy!
