Well, if you'd asked me if I'd like to hear mixing bluegrass music with New Orleans jazz, I would've said, "HELL NO!" But that was before last night. The Del McCoury Band combined with Preservation Hall jazz band is like a little bit of heaven. You'd think such divergent styles would have a hard time finding common ground, but they not only found it, they KILLED IT!! Drop them both in the amazing Smith Center for the Performing Arts here in Las Vegas and you've got yourself one amazing night of music and fun.
Don's nephew is the banjo player with Del McCoury and the banjo he plays was built by Don's brother Dave. It was all pretty amazing. Here's some shots of the fairly new Smith Center:
Here's just a little snippet of them on youtube. It's hard to find a clip that doesn't feature "I'll Fly Away" which is probably my least favorite of the songs they do. But through the ebb and flow of bands and specific instrumentalists as they morph and change styles, you're exposed to some of the most exquisite sounds I've ever heard. A truly remarkable evening!!
