I 1st saw Mavis, with her sisters, and Pops, at one of the early Marriposa folk fesrivals, around when I was still in high school maybe the early 60s...They did what I guess was a 'workshop' Pops on his electric guitar, tremelo going. the girls...this was in a field in a rural Ontario setting.. So we had maybe 30 or so people present...and Mavis was probably a teenager, with every bit as much soul as ever...I think there were 4 of them including Pops, and they would clap each one differently so the clapping became like percussion...just fantastic...and that 1 time experience with them made me a life long admirer, of them, and here is Mavis still carrying on, even though after the death of Pops she almost lacked the confidence to continue on her own...God bless her for keeping her in our music world...what a star she is.....Steffan

Terrific post. Love Mavis' vocal generosity and restraint. She's got the pipes to blow those guys away but she keeps her voice in the pocket, supporting the rest of the band. Sign of a pro. Of course this is not the first time she's sang "The Weight".

Probably the highlight of the film for me.

Very cool to see Mavis Staples in the clip in the OP. I love Wilco & enjoyed much of Nick Lowe's stuff, so great to see them do this. Really good find.
