REALLY didn't want to go into work this morning (just part time at the fire academy since I have retired), so I made a side trip to Worcester and a stop at our favorite Guild dealer.
Last time I was in, the only new piece of interest was a GAD JF30-12. I played it briefly and was smitten with its neck profile, so today was the excuse to try it again. Well, still like the neck profile, but the strings weren't where my fingers wanted them to be! Hmmm, kinda high action...either needs some truss rod tightening (two allen screws just inside the sound hole) or a neck reset! Carl was advised...
So then, for just double the price but significantly less than list price, I tried the new NH 512 hanging there. OH! About 1/3 to 1/2 more volume, strings seemed to be where my fingers wanted them , but not crazy about the neck profile. But I couldn't make a mistake on it...somebody is telling me something. It'll be while before I can muster up the courage to tell she-who-must-be-obeyed that another one is coming home...
However Bill's Pick-of-the-Day would have to be a NH D-40 hanging there. Just a real nice guitar, played well, very balanced sound, understated elegance. A little pricey I think, but a very nice spruce/mahogany guitar. While at LMG 2010 I had to tip my hat to the D50's (both Standard and Traditional), this D40 was the one if someone is looking for a good 'un...
My observations, your mileage may vary...
