Just bought a Guild Pilot and it came with EMG looking pickups but no battery inside.
Did they ever make one without active EMGs. Serial # is BE104215

Yes. Kurt, the resident Pilot expert will fill in the details but the earliest Pilots were passive and some of the later active Pilots used PUs that weren't EMGs. Kurt's gigging bass is a passive Pilot.

Looking at the serial number lists there are either typos in the list or a typo in the serial number you gave.

I double checked and the serial # I posted is BE104215
It seems this is a 1992 model.

I have two 1990 model with active EMGs.
I have one 1993 model with active EMGs.

I went brain dead on the serial. Sorry.

While waiting for Kurt, over here he says his gigging bass is a SB-600 with passive DiMarzio pick-ups in it.

You're a little confusing here Frono. I have the #20th Pilot built and I'm pretty sure it's active, (has a battery). And yes there were later "active" Pilots that had Bartolini pick-ups in them but there are also later, (non-pickguard) Pilots that have passive DiMarzio's in them. That would be the SB-600, (My gigging bass).

From the chart on the Guild site I would concur with the 1992 date.

As for the pick-ups, if they look just like EMG "P" and "J" pick-ups and don't say "EMG" on them and there is no battery, I would guess that it is a SB-600 model with the passive Dimarzios. The only way to confirm this is to pull out one of the "P" pick-ups and pry the plastic cover off of the coil. Inside the cover it will say; "DiMazio", (at least mine does).

The SB-600's, SB-601 and the SB-602 all use the "BE" prefix! So the only way to tell them apart are by the pick-ups.

Note: Got tired and I not re-writing it again so it goes as it is!
