You know they're out there but don't often see them. This morning there were 2 full grown woodies across the road. Did the best I could with a point and shoot through the kitchen window.

Sound like a pile driver when they go to work  . We always get a bit excited when the pileated comes around here.

Last year I saw one digging a nest hole in a tree behind our house. This year I've seen twice as many. Maybe the population is growing. Lots more Blue birds in the last couple years.

:) I'm not a bird guy like Killdeer, but man how we enjoy watching them........all kinds of birds. Mrs. West grabs her cup of coffee, her bird books and her binoculars on any Saturday morning and she's usually good for 3-4 hours on the back porch.

Great shots!! :D Killdeer will be envious!! :p :p Just kidding Joe!  :D

I saw one of those 'peckers about 32 years ago in mid-state Florida (Crystal River) it came down my chimney and was as black as a tire with a red crown on top of his head exactly like your pics. I think about that bird every time I see a pecker. The type I see now (in South Fla) are small and greyish with a lot of spots. The big blackie I saw way back when was huge, probably 20 inches tall. I haven't seen one like that until your pix. Great memory jog, thanks.

Bird photos....what a great idea!
Great kitchen window shot. I always say shoot 'em where you find 'em.

Just FYI, that's a female, so your other one might be her mate. Think of a nest somewhere nearby.....just sayin'.

Thanks for sharing,
Joe
