Just bought A50 in (supposedly) nice condition, and its heading my way! The only thing missing on it is the pickguard... Whats the best way to get a replacement, that would be also correct? I dont think I have enough patience to wait around for one to pop up on ebay or something, it might never happen in this decade... So I guess a custom made? Any favourite sources for that?

I did the research and ordered two sheets of rose-red colored material off ebay. It's great to choose the material, but it is coming from China, hasn't come yet. My guitar tech is going to do the work. There are vids on youtube to see what he will be doing, and why I don't want to do it myself.

Be careful -- a lot of those Asian cheapie pickguard blanks are just digital photographs printed on plastic. From 200 feet they look sort of OK, but up close they're crap. You can practically see the digitized pixels and each blank consists of an image that is repeated over and over, like the background in those old Hanna-Barbara cartoons, and every pickguard blank is exactly the same.

IMO, you're better off spending the extra bucks and getting something decent, like from Stew-Mac.

Mirabella Guitars and Restorations in Copiague, NY (Long Island) has a reputation for making high quality archtop pick guard reproductions. He works on a lot of high end vintage guitars (D'Angelico, Stromberg, etc.) so he is probably in the high dollar price range. But it never hurts to inquire.

I can recommend Quick Guards. The pickguards Mike Quick makes are not cheap but he does a first class job. I've ordered a Custom pickguard not too long ago, put the original pickguard with a ruler on a scanner, send him the pdf so he could make a template and a few days later he shipped it. And it's a work of art, very well made.

Thanks guys! I spoke with the guy who will convert my A50 to X50, and he said he will make the pickguard, no problem. Since I already have an X50 with one, I'll just take it off and scan it so he can get the right shape and dimension. I'm excited about the project!
