I was 10 in 1955 - i wasn't really into music yet, even though my dad was a jazz guitarist. My knowledge of music ran to Davey Crockett, How Much is that Doggy, etc. My 17 year old cousin put an interesting looking 78 on his hi-fi for me to hear - Bo Diddley. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, it was like something from Mars. From that moment on i knew there was music out there that was unlike anything I was used to. A few months later some guy named Elvis was on tv, and the world changed.

That one was before the cigar box. My favorite Diddley song was and is "Can't Judge a Book"

I read somewhere that Bo Diddley took his name from the diddley bow used to play home made cigar box guitars like a violin. I think it was Wikipedia.

I can't actually say that any one song changed my life. Now, understand that my life has had several DRAMATIC changes and there are a few songs that I link to those times of change. I really do. But it wasn't the SONG that changed my life, it was usually crappy people or family that were just too idiotic to deal with me.... so I can say there are some PEOPLE who changed my life. And those change were profound! But there were songs during those times that .... connected with me. I guess the best you could say is that because people changed my life, that these songs helped save me from going down. I'll give you that. Probably one of the most traumatic times in my life, a new album came out... and as I sat there in my new rented guest house wondering how the whole world fell apart.... I put this song on and it moved me greatly. It's always been a favorite since then. Just because it was there for me......

Everything comes and goes
Marked by lovers and styles of clothes
Things that you held high
And told yourself were true
Lost or changing as the days come down to you
Down to you
Constant stranger
You're a kind person
You're a cold person too
It's down to you
You go down to the pick up station
Craving warmth and beauty
You settle for less than fascination
A few drinks later you're not so choosy
When the closing lights strip off the shadows
On this strange new flesh you've found
Clutching the night to you like a fig leaf
You hurry
To the blackness
And the blankets
To lay down an impression
And your loneliness

In the morning there are lovers in the street
They look so high
You brush against a stranger
And you both apologize
Old friends seem indifferent
You must have brought that on
Old bonds have broken down
Love is gone
Ooh, love is gone
Written on your spirit this sad song
Love is gone
Everything comes and goes
Pleasure moves on too early
And trouble leaves too slow
Just when you're thinking
You've finally got it made
Bad news comes knocking
At your garden gate
Knocking for you
Constant stranger
You're a brute, you're an angel
You can crawl, you can fly too
It's down to you
It all comes down to you
