Just realized I may have posted to the wrong place before so here it goes :D :

Hi all, newbie here.
I have been playing for over 30 years, mostly electric, and now dicovering a new love and passion for acoustic (I hear old age does this to you :? ).
I also have lots of love and passion for vintage instruments, and I recently bumped into an ad for the sale of 1972 D25.
Went to see the seller, saw the guitar, heard it, and snatched it away as fast as I could.
Love at first sight, I own 2 other acoustics (Yam and Gibson) like the Yam (use it mainly when I work on some new things and pattern that requires hours of practice to save the Dove's finish :D ), love the Gibson, which is probably why I never looked any further in the acoustic world, but when I heard that D25, I immediately knew what that "Guild" thing was all about, and now I want a D55 and many more Guilds
Now to the question: My 72 is an all mohogany body flat backed and the label says D25BR, I had never seen or heard of the "BR" models, is it the way they called the 25 in 72 or does it mean something else pertaining to the model?
Thanks all in advance!

HI Bluesy, welcome aboard! There's too much out there I don't know so I'm no expert but I AM a big D25 fan. That suffix you're asking about was usually a tonewood or finish indicator. Example D25CH= Cherry finish spruce top. A D25M could be either actual mahogany top or mahogany stained spruce. I'm sure many of us would be more than willing to donate a little Quality Check time to the instrument if it becomes helpful!!!
Ok went home last night, checked Hans Moust's book "The Guild Guitar Book" (the "bible") and saw that BR is actually brown stained finish as pointed out elsewhere in this thread. THANK YOU Killdeer.

The D-25s at this time were all mahogany (with rosewood fretboard and bridge), with different stains/finishes. The "BR" in D-25 stands for "brown" (as opposed to cherry) finish. Enjoy!

Welcome aboard, bluesypicky. GAS around here is "Guild Acquisition Syndrome." You'll find it's a pleasant addiction. :D

Oh... and welcome aboard! Last time I played a '72 flat-backed D-25 was in January of '73... I chose my D-35 instead. I'd like to add one to my collection, some day. D

Bluesy,
Welcome to the Guilded gang.
According to our "bible," on page 125, you'll see that 'BR' stands for "brown stained finish." Still and all, you have a fine guitar on your hands so play it often and enjoy it!

Thanks all for the quick responses and welcome!
I understand the letters after D25 refer to the finish, what threw me off here is that Guild chose to call it the D25M (as in mahogany) after switching from mahogany top to spruce top, but it was just a finish reference as you explained.
I actually saw and was thinking about buying a 1975 D25M (and I might still buy it mind you, that's how loony I got) and the finish is actually pretty close if not identical to my D25BR, so I guess mahogany with a brown stain = spruce with a mahogany stain!

I'll be glad (and proud :p ) to post pics (when I get a chance) of that thing that so quickly turned me into a guild freak

Bluesy,

My D-25M is really dark and even though I was reluctant to stray away from good old natural finishes, this guitar has stolen my Guilded heart. It gets a lot of reaction for both its looks and its sound. Wish I could get half as much attention!

Funny you should mention your reluctance to the finish: When I went to check the first one out (The M) I secretely thought to myself "boy, I don't care for this dark finish..."
But after a few bars picked on it, the finish was the least of my concern!!!!! I had GAS
