Had fun at the local open stage recently. I planned to do a 2-song tribute to Leonard Cohen to mark his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (Cohen’s is not the first name that comes to mind when I think of R & R, but that’s another matter).
I began with “First we take Manhattan”. After the first verse the vocal mic boom started to droop, very slowly. I did my best to follow it. By the time the host noticed and made his way to the stage, I was on my knees. The host slowly raised the boom again, and I followed it up, without missing a beat. Don’t know why the boom misbehaved – it had been fine for several previous singers. The audience loved it - you can imagine the comments!
In keeping with the “Rockin’ Lennie” theme, I then did a speeded-up, barre-chord rendition of “Suzanne”, complete with Chuck Berry duck-walk and guitar-hero posturing (or at least, the best posturing a 3B* guy can manage). Got the most applause that I’ve ever had.
