The guitar arrived yesterday and is really a beauty. Lovely flame and that very sweet orange finish. It does have pitting on the gold hardware and some scratches here and there. But overall as the listing said, it's very clean. It even came with the owners booklet which has a copyright of 2002. So I'm going to say it's a 2002. Unless of course the owners booklet didn't actually come with the guitar originally? it plays very well, the Guildsby returns to tune and this is the first archtop I've had where the intonation is spot on across all the strings. So that was a very nice surprise. I was also prepared to not like the pups after reading about the Fender HB1's. And although I don't have Guild HB1's or SD's to compare these with. They actually sound very good through my PRRI w/ a Celestion Gold. All in all I have to say it's a winner

But, and it's a big but that I'll have to give consideration to. When I decided to get a Bigsby-equipped guitar my first thought went to another Gretsch. As I had a short-scale Tennessee Rose (ala George Harrison @ Shea) that was very nice. But then I thought let's go Guild this time and it was a toss-up between a Westerly-era Starfire III and the X-170T.

As I write this I should have gone with the Starfire III. And this is now the decision I have to make. I'm still recovering from quadruple bypass surgery and along with a recent diagnosis of advancing arthritis in my hands playing the X-170T is not very comfortable. I realize the lower bout on the Starfire is not much narrower but I think the thinner depth will help. I'm not giving up yet but at some point I'll probably need to look at trading the X-170T for a Starfire III. Hopefully it won't come to that as I really like this guitar. But if I can't play it then it won't be very useful sitting in its case.

I'll post some pics as soon as I can and thank you to all the folks here for making me feel very welcome

Sorry to hear that the X-170T may not work for you. It shouldn't be too hard to flip it to get a late Westerly era Starfire III. There always seems to be one for sale at any given time.

I love X170Ts in orange. Need pics!

Based on your dating request I’m assuming it doesn’t have a coil split switch. Is that correct?

Correct, no coil split. I really like this guitar but tried it again this morning and it wasn't so good. I'll probably list it here first to see if anyone wants to trade. But I want to give it another few days first. I have a cardiologist follow-up today and will post the pics when I get back. And please, please, please folks - - take care of your health and well being. I didn't have any symptoms and this was the first time I was ever in the hospital for anything (I'm 66 this year). And even through bypass (and valve replacement) is the most 'popular' surgery in the US and pretty routine (except for the person having it), I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Jon, if you are deciding to sell this guitar, there are some rules you have to follow here. Please famliarize yourself with the FS/FT/WTB forum and read the rules. You can only sell there, and there will be some restrictions for you as a new forum member. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the heads up. I'm seeing a PT today about the issues I'm having and hopefully that will help. If I do decide to put the guitar up for trade or a sale and post it here, it will of course be done in accordance with LTG rules and policies.

Beauty guitar and love the flame maple top!

I had aortic valve surgery 2 years ago and it took me about 8 weeks until I could start playing my acoustics and thicker hollowbody guitars and about 4 months until I could do a pushup! I did all of my PT (7 weeks) and was snowshoeing at 10K ft altitude in 10 weeks, so definitely follow your PT therapists advice and continue to exercise afterwards. I'm now back at the gym and lifting more weight than I have since my 30's (I'm 66) and can play all my guitars for hours with no pain, so full recovery and beyond is definitely possible. Good luck in your recovery!

Thank you so much for that as I'm having a pretty rough time. The whole chest area is really bad and the shooting pain and burning extends into the shoulders and back. Which is why I'm having so much trouble with the guitar and other things. It's been just over 4 months for me and things are up and down. Including my blood pressure which is all over the place. Argh, I sound like a whiner. I know things will get better and the surgery was definitely needed. I just have to realize it's going to take time.

I had a lot of pain in the shoulder and back areas also and got some massage, which did wonders! When they crack you open it's a pretty violent exercise that stretches, twists and bends things in your chest, back and sides that aren't supposed to move that way. Couple that with the fact they put you on a heart/lung machine and that messes with you also, some effects that I still feel like occasional dizziness and and brain fog.

It took a while for things to get back to normal and I did a lot of stretching, hot pads and icing and a fair amount of ibuprofin before I really started feeling good again. Couple that with the fact they put you on a heart/lung machine and that messes with you also. Hang in there and know that it will get better, it just takes time. After 2 years I'm really starting to feel like my mean old self again...finally! :)
