do you blame him?

why be associated with someone that has nothing positive or salient to say

It probably has more to do with the copyright issue and money than the politics.

Agreed, Effin; copyrights are copyrights. Fine Guild sighting, too. 8)

I believe it is about politics because it only ever happens with musicians and Republicans.

I'll call rodeo on that one. Why don't they just ask for permission first?

They don't ask for permission because unless they are dealing with a country artist they already know the answer.

And what makes you think that every rock musician is a democrat, and every country musician is a republican? Generalizations like that are a slippery slope. I think Ted Nugent would have something to say about that, as would the Dixie Chicks.

I'll shut up now...

There might be politics involved, but it's really about the Benjamins.

And I don't blame Petty one little bit. It's his song.

It's politics and implied endorsement.

"... In 2008, the singer allowed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton to use American Girl for her unsuccessful presidential bid. But he was much less sympathetic in 2000, when Republican candidate George W Bush was discovered to be playing I Won't Back Down at his rallies. "This use has not been approved," Petty's representatives told the future president. "Any use made by you or your campaign creates, either intentionally or unintentionally, the impression that you and your campaign have been endorsed by Tom Petty, which is not true."

Again, I'll be less lazy next time and just post the pic. No political discussion intended.

Abso-effin'-lutely.
If it was my song I'd want my due too. If I ain't takin' money then I d--n well better be able to withhold (or grant) permission for use.
No matter WHO wants to use it.

She'd have lots to choose from in the country segment. In addition to Ted Nugent, she could consider Kid Rock, Gene Simmons, Alice Cooper, Prodigy, Mariah Carey, Lynard Skynrd, Meatloaf, Joe Perry, Jeff Baxter, Gloria Estefan, Tift Merritt, Styx, Beach Boys, Lyle Lovette, Sammy Hagar, Dave Mustaine, 50 Cent and Prince willing to assist if she can find a non country song she prefers...

OK; I'm pretty conservative these days, but have always enjoyed music regardless of a performer's personal views. Neil Young, Jackson Brown, CSN, Dylan, etc. are personal faves; I could listen to their stuff all day long. Good music is good music...
