After reading Basie’s autobiography, I got the complete Decca recordings (1937-1939) of the first incarnations of his big band. During one number I was surprised to hear a guitar solo. Of course, Freddie Green is famous for, among other things, never soloing.
Turns out it was the trombonist and composer/arranger Eddie Durham taking the guitar solo while Freddie drives the rhythm section.
