In a Halloween spirit, I decided to post a pic of my 'new' modified NS X175, I'm sure it will scary some folks here:friendly_wink: I def. love the tone of this thing now sooo much better than with Franz reissues, so no regrets on that. As of new look, I THINK I like it better too, the only thing I'd change is tailpiece to trad. Guild harp one, but I couldn't find the one I like yet at reasonable price. Anyway, enjoy! Or not!

I could say something smart-assed like you could have bought a Gibson or high-mindedly point you towards Chris Novak's custom Franz replicas/replacements, but I won't.

It looks lovely, and if it works for you, go for it. Very sweet. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for all the comments folks, it's been fun. Let me just say that I wasn't going for Gibson look or sound. Nothing could be further from the truth! First of all, the pickups are SD '59, and they have a bit of history with Guild. The decision came after I realized that for better or worse I'm not a fan of single coil pickups. It's fair to say I will try to avoid them in the future, so I don't have to go through this again.

The main idea behind this though, was my preference for early Hoboken look and built, and Westerly era humbucking sound. I think the skinny waist x175 from 50's and early 60's were perfect look wise and shape wise, and i prefer them over heavy and chubby looking Westerly ones. But the tone wise its the opposite. So i made a perfect x175 for myself. Well, almost, HB-1s are missing, and no Guild tailpiece, but its fixable maybe in a future.

And last, I really, really enjoying the tone of this thing now. I hope I will have a chance to make some kinda demo soon.

I have no issues with the change. People told me to get the non-Bigsby version for a warmer sound, if I wanted to learn jazzy stuff. So de-Bigsby'd it and put on possibly more jazzy sounding pickups. Good for you ! It's not like you hacked up a vintage Guild.

Nice job. It's your guitar, it's not vintage, and it looks like a quality job. Nothing worse than a guitar sitting in a closet and with the mod, that one will get played.
I just got a Newark Street X-175 and am liking the pickups. I like the CE-100 body style better and am considering swapping some of these pickups into a NS CE-100.
I've always liked the DeArmond Dynasonic pickups from times gone by and thought about swapping some of those into NS CE-100. This leads me to think, "are buyers of these guitars we're modding today going to curse us for modding a vintage guitar 60 years from now?" Just a thought.

Some cursing me already, haha! Anyway, i don't really care, guitars are made for musicians first and foremost, and musicians need them to do their job. I felt like the old pickups didnt quite get what i needed, so i swapped them, and it worked out perfect. Of course, i could get another guitar instead, but for some weird reasons i just cant find a better one by playability. Im sure I will, but i need to work now, and cant sit and wait.

Oh yeah, and thanks to the luthier who did that, he done a really great job, if anybody needs one in NYC, i cant recommend him enough.

Hi all, here's the a little video made for promotional purposes by the leader of the jazz trio. I'm playing my 'custom' X175, mostly rhythm in the video, the solos are cut off (oh well.. there's a snippet of it at 4:21 though). The gig was at a restaurant, so nothing fancy:)
