Where to start... It's been nearly 5 hours since I went to the post office to pick this guitar up and I'm still at a loss for words.
I'll cut to the chase, I've bought a Guild M-75 from 1956.
I had never in my wildest dreams dreamt of having this guitar as my first Guild. The only Guild I've tried was that messed up Starfire and buying an "unknown" guitar for major cash is just crazy.
But I've wanted an Aristocrat for a few years now, and it all started with seeing The Raconteurs performing on the "Later with Jools" show. Brendan Benson was playing on an odd-looking Les Paul and I instantly fell in love with the looks of the guitar and when I did some research and found out it was a Guild M-75 and also found out how it was constructed, well, I was sold. It combined my three favourite guitar aspects: P-90s, LP shape, [semi-]hollow. How can something like that be a bad thing?
Hans contacted me about a week ago and let me know about a potential M-75 for sale, and after seeing the images of the particular guitar and found out the price, I just couldn't say no. I knew I would've regretted it for a long, long time if I hadn't jumped on that deal. The fact that Hans could see the guitar in question and give his approval only made it easier to buy a quite expensive guitar without testing it.
I've said it before Hans, but thank you, from the bottom of my heart. You're my favourite from now on.
The condition of the guitar is amazing, it is after all 56 years old but the only real issue is the top binding which needs to be redone, oh and the heelcap but that's a very minor issue. There really aren't words to describe the condition of the guitar, the images will have to speak for themselves.
I knew it was a match made in heaven when I played my first chord on the Aristocrat. Wonderful tone, great playability, the neck is nicely fat without being a baseball bat(which I really don't mind). (I'm shaking my head at this point)
I just don't know what to write about this guitar, I generally have a hard time describing tone, feel and all other arbitrary aspects of guitars, and it doesn't become easier when a guitar takes your breath away.
I'm not all that happy with these images, I rushed them with the light waning in my apartment. I'll have to redo them at a later time.
