So, I took another flier on an Ebay guitar but it still kind of adhered to my new parameters I'm trying to follow when I make a buy decision.

1.) It was more than reasonable priced so I think i could make a buck or two should I decide to sell

2.) I've never owned (as far as I can recall) a black Guild Jumbo

This one is a made in Corona guitar which caused me to hesitate. I've not had great luck with Corona built acoustics. I've owned two others, both dogs. I've heard good things about electrics coming from there and other LTG members have been pleased with their Corona Acoustics but I was not.

I believe this one is a MIRC guitar. The sn inside the soundhole was covered up with another sn and the top of the back of the headstock is covered up with a thin metal plate that likely covers up the sn that used to be stamped there. I checked with Ralf who has forgotten more than I'll ever know about guitars and he feels it is likely a MIRC guitar as well. As ya'll likely know they did that so they wouldn't have to honor any warranty (likely for other reasons as well)

I will say this guitar sounds really, really good. It does have a high E string buzz that I think is the result of a nut that needs some work. But, other than that, it has that big sound we've come to expect from a Guild F 50. Plus, it's black and I didn't have a black guitar (yea, I know that's a lame excuse) It does have a couple small dings on the soundboard and the black paint is chipped down to the wood at the bottom of the bridge (bass side) but other than that, it seems to be in fine condition.

I now have 3 F 50's including the Oxnard built GSR in Oxblood which I absolutely adore and an old 1971 in Natural from Westerly. If the nut is "fixable" I'll likely sell the Westerly to help fund another purchase I'm considering. We'll see.

Here's a few pics:

Love that in black! I don't recall ever seeing a metal "serial number cover". Interesting.

Me neither but it might be that the previous or even earlier owner owner added this to cover the burnt out last 4 digits of the original serial number and maybe the USED stamp as well. I don't think MIRC added that.

I wonder if the MIRC designation is bc of a bridge repair. Odd that it would have an ebony fb and rosewood bridge. Maybe that was common at one point. It is super nice and I like black guits and it being a jumbo only makes it that much better.

you mentioned the oxblood F55. There is one on the verb right now for $4400. That is a dream guitar for me. I have the natural w/rosewood counterpart, but those things are gorgeous. Only 60 of them floating around. Sorry to veer.

Did Fender use MIRC when in Corona? I guess it's possible, Richard? ANyway, looks very interesting.

Nice! I like it in black especially with the ebony neck, but agree the rosewood bridge looks out of place. If it isn’t original then I’d sand and stain it dark. Stewmac has some good dyes.

If everything else checks out on the guitar I may just have my local Luthier cut me a new Ebony bridge. he's very good at that. I'll know more tomorrow.

I think they did but the serial number on the sticker inside Richards guitar is a bit different from the typical MIRC serial number. So I'm also not 100% positive on MIRC.
In most cases I have seen a MIRC serial number starts with "311" and it has usually 9 digits: (various examples from various manufacturers)

But we have seen other Corona made guitars with those other shorter labels. So it is possible Corona used somebody else for some time.
Here is a similar but only 6 digits number to the one Richard got, which was/is not really MIRC's way:

This is part of the transparent label in Richards F-50, the number has 7 digits in total!

Here's an example GAD posted before, that could be hidden by the metal plate added:

Which serial number ?...

Ralf
Maybe both, and make up a third one to really confuse the next generation of investigators.

For "appearance" I would think the S/N that is visible through the soundhole would be sufficient. For "vintage" has not the guitar already been altered with the addition of the brass plate? Perhaps Hans would also weigh in on a technically accurate versus visually acceptable solution?

Or you emboss the model number or owner's name, etc. Just something, anything, to make it appear like it was intentional for a purpose other than hiding the text beneath it. I mean, even sewer drain covers have attractive scroll designs...

Black has got to be the toughest color - or shade - on a guitar, no other finish will show imperfections as well, same as on a car.
