There is no need to take the screw holding the knob on. To take off the tuner just remove the two small screws holding it on on the back of the headstock and undo the nut holding it in place on the front of the headstock.
yeah thanx ...well past that step ;)

If I were you I'd remove the Gotohs and measure all of the pertinent dimensions and get Grovers, 18:1s

Grover will list all the necessary dimensions to ensure the right fit. FAR superior tuning machines, IMO

yes... Hans...
gave me 2 Grovers that would "slide-in" but
then with the additional filling of old screw holes and new drilling and the new tuners w/only 1 hole
plus
the old units, Did polish up better than expected ...
I know this site is "relatively" dedicated to the more purist Guild owners
and though a prized possession ,I accept it will not be getting the play-time, that my other instruments get....

so, my approach is if the triflow loosens things up and I get the fingerboard done and looking sharp (sharper) ...
I'll go w/ that...if the tuners feel hobbled
yeah , then replace (y) thanx for input

The Grovers only need one screw because they have a center threaded bushing that holds the machine in place, the screw is just to stop rotation. Iirc, the Gotohs have a push in center bushing that just takes up room and centers the stem. I found the Gotohs on my '78 G37 to be notchy and not at all smooth as well. The Grovers are smooth as butter.

I have No Doubt...from All the info shared, here and some emails etc...they are likely "far" superior ...the issue became when Hans Mouse indicated new drilling and filling...and having just been to the dentist
it sort of seemed like the additional work was not only more than initially planned for, but, if not being used so "frequently" thus ..
less tuning... is the effort necessary ...
but...that said, if after the "lower effort" tune up, I am not pleased yeah the Grover rotomatic 102 will be replacing the current units
