Did you all notice the up and coming scamming technique in CL?
I placed a few ads recently and already had a bunch of these coming through my e-mail, so for your education and as a heads up if nothing else, here it goes:

It is no longer the "mover" sent out to pick up the "item" with a cashiers check for an amount superior to the value of the item, which was not a problem as they kindly trusted you to give the difference back to the mover in question upon pick up of "item"...

Now they say (and in a much improved English I must say) stuff like that (copied and pasted from actual e-mail):

"You must read this if youre legit and go through my direction. My photos and cell phone # are placed on my discreet profile so if you take delight in what you see then find my # and text/call me right away. This is the ONLY way to stop pyschos and to verify you're a non dangerous man esp. since I want to host at my house. I'm not a phony so stop questioning me. If you think Im not real then move on. I am a creative chick in bedroom so rather tell you over the phone what I am trying to find in a guy rather than wasting my time and writing here. I just hope youre the real deal too! xoxo "

Added to that, were a couple of pics of what appeard to be a very beautiful lady in a bikini sunbathing, and of course a link, which is always supposed to get you where you need to be to capture the contact information which will allow you to proceed with the sale inquiry. (Their sale that is)
Since I'm not completely senile yet  I have not clicked on any of these links, which is probably why my PC is still up and running, unless it was intended to get you into the next step of the scam, but I don't care to finding this out.

Ahhh the fun never stops!

Any email I get that seems to be too good to be true, I will not respond to, or click any links. And a bikini clad girl who seems to like me is definitely too good to be true...

"If you are not sure of the source, never click on anything" is a good rule of thumb.

At least that new scam is still blatantly obvious.

CL is a pretty annoying place to sell stuff, in my experience. Between the scams & potential "buyers" who seem to think that because you're selling something via CL you must be desperate & willing to take any ridiculous low-ball offer, I'm hesitant to use it again.

Craigslist isn't the only place where this stuff shows up. If we were to turn the filters off here at LTG we'd be inundated with similar garbage. :(

"You must read this if youre legit and go through my direction."

Say what? I'd have hit the delete button after the first sentence. Sounds like "All your base are belong to us"

Craigslist is a pain, but not as painful as the charges and fees of ebay and paypal. And on craigslist, the buyer is able to evaluate the item in person, before making the purchase.

No phone number, no response from me.

All transactions by me are done at my bank or the local Police station.

In recent CL attempts, most have been scammers. Poor quality scams but still...I JUST WANT TO SELL MY DAMN JEEP RIMS!

As soon as I saw the pics thumbs attached, I was ready for the "delete" button. I must admit I paused on them for a few seconds.

Are they original rims? Are they straight? Do they need to be reset? Are they pre-AMC or Chrysler? I've heard there were problems with quality when AMC took over and things got worse under Chrysler. I think I'm interested but I need to have a friend check them out. He's banking situation is a little awkward so I'm going to give him a check for more than you are asking. I hope you will accept it and give him the difference in cash so that he can mail them to me.

Guitars for sale....

I guess these scammers are getting desperate? I'd at least make the scam somewhat related to buying/selling, instead of a straight come-on..

Oh they are in great shape. I am so desperate to unload them, I can send them to you as soon as I get the Cashiers Check in the post. I can send pictures to you for inspection at your gracious convenience.

The assumption here is that there's a real person ata keyboard targeting specific ads.
The real methodology is a bot software program on CL phishing for replies, then the replies get brought to human's attention, or the info is stolen at the time of reply when sensitive info is transmitted.. sometimes just pushing the button itself will aloow the "hook" program to get to the sensitive info on your pc even if you don't transmit any useful info.
Why it's so important not to even hit a reply button, ideally, don't even open an email
"transmitted in absence of humble request accompanying your stilted english being wary of subject"...

The scammers are obvious. The bots are less so. I had a bot which responded amazingly well to a guitar ad, putting in local references and negotiating. I went back and fourth before figuring out that it was a bot. By that time, we had agreed on a price, on me including a strap, case and picks and a cord and that we'd meet at the guitar center in Millbury, MA. Scary that I was talking with nothing but some script.

I've accused myself of being a bot.
H-ll, I'm even hiring out some of my clones to Facebook as virtual friends.
